Hi guys,

Recently purchased a bridge camera & im new to photography. Any hints & tips on getting the most out of my camera?

I would suggest learning about exposure, i.e. the three components of the exposure triangle (ISO, shutter speed and aperture) and how they affect the exposure and the appearance of your image. Also learn about composition.

It can't be denied that the RFM strategy is a better place to start.
You will learn the terminology and be very knowledgeable about
your toll. This is very often ignored.

This is where my knowledge fails, what is the RFM strategy?

Think it's a slight typo but he means Read The Manual (or maybe RTFM :D).

Camera manuals are generally pretty useful and it is important to know how the thing works, combine that with an understanding of the exposure triangle and you'll be well away.

You can read the manual, no doubt a 200 page PDF, you're not going to take it all in so have it to hand open on your device.

Ctrl+F will open the Find tool for a quick search for all references to certain aspects: focus, metering, shutter and so forth. I like to do this in bed on my lappy especial when the camera's new, shooting at stuff around the room, then dropping the camera on the duvet.

Reading the manual is very useful for sure, but also it doesn't tell you a great deal about photography so you need to combine this with learning exposure and composition.

OP, the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson is £12 or so very well spent. Also these links are quite useful

Thinking about this ... the important thing is to have fun (and enjoy learning). Reading the manual is not everyone's idea of fun, so start on auto, think composition.

I see you have a lumix dc-fz82 X 60, that's 35mm-equivalent range of 20-1200mm! ... so good reach!

My advice would be ... remember there's more to photography than reach.

Check your local College for evening Classes many start just after Easter.

Thanks for all you advice guys. Took my camera out this afternoon and posted some pics on my Flickr account
