Hi guys, just joined this site hoping to pick up tips and help with my dslr,

Just returned from holiday to Marrakech and got sick to the back teeth of the quality of my digital camera so decided to invest in a dslr to get started.

Ive picked up a canon 450d with an 18-55mm efs lens and tamron af70-300 with a couple of uv filters.

I did a small amount of research before buying but I virtually know nothing, I have also bought the canon 450d for dummies to help guide me.

I am hoping to get to Iceland next year and get some decent photos of the scenery and hopefully the northern lights, I also enjoy skiing and motorsport so I would aim to master taking photos of those aswell.

I would think that after a good read through your guide book for the 450d and experimenting with different settings you should have a fairly good idea about how your camera works, I guess you wanna take more control of your camera and not rely on program mode to get the pictures that you want.

I would also get one or 2 other books and magazines to help you understand how to set your camera for different situations, like lanscapes and sport.

UV filters dont realy serve much purpose for a dslr apart from protect the lens from getting damaged, I would think about investing in a good circular polarising filter as its not only good for lanscapes which would help darken blue sky's and add contrast as well as saturation to colours but it would help with glare from sunlight and glass and water refections.

Hi Tom, welcome to TP

Learn to use the camera meter, and get a grip on the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO. All else follows from this. Don't worry too much about buying new bits until you know what they do.

Northern lights is a funny thing to photograph (from what I've read).

It's not in your list so I don't know if you've already got one, but for any type of night time scenery photos, a tripod is a must.

Hi Tom & welcome

The 450D is a great body and very capable...

Was the 18-55 the IS model ?

I would be careful the UV filters don't degrade your images - what make are they ? I'd run a test with them off & on the lens and make sure your not getting any colour cast, glare / reflection from them...

Enjoy your new purchase, there is lots of information on this site, if you are not sure ask away...

Look forward to seeing some shots

They're jessops 58mm and 62mm. That's all I know about them really!

It should be arriving Wednesday, so I can play about with it all then!

Okay, we'll have a play with them and make sure your not getting any issues.

I personally don't use filters, but do use a hood all the time - I would recommend you look in to getting a hood for your lenses (if they don't already have one).

Bet you can't wait til Wednesday :-)

I'm in a similar boat myself having just returned from holiday frustrated with my camera and have bought a canon 500d.

I've got myself a copy of 'Understanding exposure' to get through as that seems to be recommended often.
