As per title I'm completely new to the forum and hopefully going to start a brand new hobby. I have always fancied the idea of taking photos and am now going to be squeezing every bit of advice from you kind ladies and gentlemen. firstly I am going to need a camera now as I have just started looking this seems like minefield and a half so will try and find the correct forum and start to ask.

Thanks in advance

Hi

Welcome to TP, worth going to your local camera store and see what is available and see what feels good in your hand.

You may first want to set a budget otherwise it can and will get very expensive.

Hello Richard :welcome: to the forum

Do your homework, it can be daunting

Daunting is not the word and then after the camera there are the lenses. [emoji3]

Hi Richard, And welcome aboard TP. "Enjoy".

Hi & welcome to TP :)

As a beginner it is likely many questions that you have have been asked before and answered by the TP folk here https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/talk-beginners.73/ perhaps have a read through and then ask your questions as appropriate.

For now I would suggest you think about and perhaps answer these questions:-

  1. What type of subjects do you think you would like to start photographing?
  2. How much do you wish to spend initially?
  3. Are you aware that depending on your choices it can lead to GAS (gear acquisition syndrome ;) ) i.e. could get expensive given time!
  4. Again depending on your answers to 1 & 2 above it might be (subject to advice from others) a good idea to start with secondhand gear to 'test' how well you get on and develop yourself and your skill level.
Rest assured it is a satisfying hobby which also can have it's frustrations..................but do dive in and test the water ~ and remember there is not such thing as a stupid question :)

Thanks for that

I am currently looking for courses (any considered) or local meetings in the local Manchester area but think I will leave camera until January and do lots of research over the Christmas holiday.

Hi Richard and a warm welcome to TP.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and your new hobby :)
