Newbie urgent flash gun help please

My mrs got me a Jessops 360afdc for christmas she gave it to me tonight to have a play ready for tomorrow it has come with no instructions. I had a play and cant get it to work with my EOS 350D tried loads of setting it will flash on test button but nothing else happens.

Could anyone help with a basic setting guide and set up so I can use it tomorrow.

Is it on the hotshoe correctly?
Is flash enabled on the camera?
What flash mode are you set to?
Does the pop up flash try to fire?

try the camera in manual ,,,something like 125th and f8 /11
 
How about giving the hot shoe and flash seat a good clean then make sure its located well?
Hope thats not too obvious and you've tried it twice already

Yay, Don't fire the flash directly at the subject to avoid harsh shadows, bounce it off walls or if it has a white pop up card, aim the flash at the ceiling which will light the room and throw some light on the subject at the same time.
 
one last question is isopropyl alcohol ok to clean the contacts ?
