Newbie unsure which camera to get?

A200/300 Or nikon d60?

Sorry to sound like a party pooper. :razz:

What is the point of adding a poll and asking people which one you should buy because you can't make your mind up? Get yourself along to your local camera shop (Jessops?) and have a play with the bodies that you are considering.

Any of the camera brands produce good cameras and lenses - what matters more is how the camera feels to you; what kind of photography are you interested in? Have a look at the old/new lenses available for each system and make an informed decision from there.

FWIW I'd go down the route of a 2nd hand body (more for your money), then do the same with lenses....a lot more bang for your buck, so to speak.

If they have an A200 in there as well then I'd definitely recommend picking up and trying both of them - as I'm sure you already plan to. You may find the A300 more hassle to use due to the smaller viewfinder - I did, but there are plenty of others who are fine with it. Best to try it and see for yourself.

You have to bear in mind that it can be a bit daunting starting out with something like this on your own when you know nothing about it. Just because a camera feels nice when you're holding it doesn't mean it's the right one for you. Best to get some opinions from more experienced people who actually live with the cameras first before making a decision. Gotta do all your homework before throwing yourself into something as expensive as phtography :D

Haven't we all been there though? The last thing I would do is put up a poll asking which camera should I buy....you're asking for biased responses - it's unlikely that a lot of people have experience with both cameras.

FYI - I've only been doing photography since last August and did a good couple of months of research before biting the bullet. :)

I agree, as I did before buying my first D-SLR. The amount of reading (and searching of threads ;)) I did was ridiculous. :bonk:
 
True, but obviously you have to take peoples opinions with a pinch of salt and try to extract the facts from them. Anyone who accepts someone's opinion as written in stone - especially when talking about something like photography where people can be fiercely biased :) - is asking for trouble, but if done properly then it is just another form of research on top of the rest which any intelligent person would be doing.

In my view, finding out the opinions of people who actually live with the cameras and have good long term experience with them, then extracting the facts, is ten times more valuable than reading reviews on the internet written by professionals who have only used the camera for a week or so. I do however agree that in the end it is completely up to him and he has got to be responsible for making his own decision :D
 
Hi welcome, just a few suggestions:

If you keep asking other people which you should buy you will never get a camera.

There was a thread like this last year and iirc it went on for nearly 2 months.
You have to buy what feels right for you. Eveyone elses viewpoint is biased by their own likes. Certainly take on baord the comments but YOU mus make the decision based on what is best for you and you alone.
Don't be put off a camera just because you may have to get a lens that manual focus needs to be used. Until AF was invented that was all we had and we all learnt fine.
Many people still use it today. Its a good skill to have.

Above all enjoy. Oh and go read "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. A very good read.

To chart my short but eventful camera body history....

Decided on a D40 (really wanted a D80 at the time) as I wasn't sure how I'd take to my new hobby. Loved the images it produced and was eventually seduced to the D90 in December, mainly for the AF in the body, the larger number of AF points but mainly for the sensor - the D90 really is a superb camera IMHO. Got to March of this year and decided that I may as well go for a body that would allow me to grow into it (and to stop upgrading for a good while!)....the D700 was the natural choice for me.

Since I changed from the D40 I only ever use the manual mode for shooting....I always challenge myself in everything I do and this has certainly been a steep yet enjoyable learning curve. :)
 
Cheers guys. I put a poll up because they are the 2 cameras im torn between and what i like. So im askin opinions on those.

There is nothing wrong with a poll for me, i dont know whats best. It could of been a landslide win for the nikon and people could slate sony. I have to find out somehow :)

Just playing devils advocate. Will the 'poll' (rather than user experience) influence your decision?
 
I would go into a shop, and handle them, get a feel, its you who is going to be using it. Also keep in mind, that whatever you buy, its only a small part of it, the rest is up to you!

Ive played with them both but cant decide. Its different to own one than play with one in a shop. I dont know most of the technical stuff about cameras so im wanting the best in that way

This is a pretty good review site. They usually compare the equipment to similar offerings and also the models above & below. :)

Cheers for that link. Ive read both reviews on there. The sony a300 gets 87% overall and the nikon d60 gets 80%.

The only aparent niggles with the sony will upset more in depth or proffessional type photographers apparently.
 
I'm another Sony user so probably a bit biased but I do think that you get more for your money with the Sony be it an A200 or A300.
 
Well, thankyou for all tha advice. I finally made a purchase :)

I went for teh sony alpha 300. I played with the d60 and sony again. Really did like the d60 but for me being a first timer the sonys ease of use and quick controlls plus features seemed the best option. Also, it was cheaper as i got it for £300.

Its actually i birthdday present from my girlfriend so i cant have it for like a month or so lol. But i cant wait now :)

:D Ha ha ha! Only kidding, Andy.

As you probably realised when you were wading through this whole thread experience, those are two great digital cameras, both with many (very devoted ;)) users - you couldn't really lose either way :shrug:.

Assuming that you are totally new to SLR photography (and not just Digital SLRs), then what matters now, until you can get your hands on it, is trying to find out as much as you can about the theory side of SLR photography :). It's really not as complicated as a lot of people seem to think, IMO, unless you're a technophobe :(.

Have a look at the links to tutorials on this website, or go and have a play with this (it taught me a lot, before I'd even picked up an SLR :thumbs:) ) ...
