Newbie to post processing , should I go for Adobe Elements (mac)

Want something basic, easy to use, won't cost the earth on a macbook

What should I be paying and which version should I get?

Thanks

Personally I'd go with the Adobe photography plan.If you hunt around there are discount codes for the first year.

Then you get photoshop and lightroom for less than £10 a month.

Then look at YouTube for tutorials from the likes of Phlearn, Serge Ramelli, Julianne Kost and Terry White to name but a few.

Alternatively, while I'd be happy to back up Keith's suggestion, if you want a standalone package I'd go for Lightroom as it covers the basic processing (and more) and also combines as a cataloguing software program (its main purpose). Ps and Lr for £120 a year is an absolute bargain especially when you take upgrades once every 2-3 years into account.

You might also want to check out Affinity photo from the App store , from Serif. Photoshop type app, but on;y £39.99.

If you are new to photo processing I'd agree that Elements is a good starting point. It has lots of easy to do options plus more complex options so you can gain skills as you go on. Then look at Lightroom and Photoshop

How much processing do you think you want to do? Are you shooting raw?

If not, start with Elements. You can convert elements catalogues to Lightroom later if you want but Elements is much simpler.
If you are - go with Lightroom.

In fact Elements and Lightroom play quite nicely together - you can use LR for cataloguing and basic processing and Elements for detailed tweaks.
While you can buy LR outright you may find in a year or so that you want full blown photoshop too - and then you'll end up subscribing to Adobe CC which will give you Lightroom anyway,

PS If you're planning on processing images much at all then you really ought to be shooting raw.

I do as little PP as possible and also shoot JPEGs. PSE does all I want/need it to and much more to boot! IIRC, it cost me £30 or so for it and the movie equivalent (?Premiere?)

i think elements is a good place to start from it doesn't cost the earth and will last you for years. if you get the bug then you can upgrade later.

I would suggest PSE if you're a complete newb at working with digital images as it has Beginner, Intermediate and Expert modes. That way you're not jumping into the deep-end of full blown Photoshop.

FWIW I use Lightroom 5 and PSE 11 on my Mac. I do initial tweaks in Lightroom and the PSE for anything to do with layers or serious editing. Considering upgrading to PSE 14.

One potential downside of PSE is that you can only work with layers in 8-bit colour space.

Thanks

Mainly shoot in JPEG

Does elements do movie files too?

Thanks for the suggestions but was looking for minimal outlay

JPEG are 8-bit colour space files anyway, so nothing lost using PSE, which doesn't do movies. When I bought PSE 11 it was bundled with Premier Elements 11 which is a video editor. I think I got both for £49 off Amazon. Looks like PSE 14 and Premier Elements 14 are available as a bundle for £65 at the moment.

If you are on a Mac then you should have iMovie installed. This will do your videos for you and it's free

you can get LR and PS cc plan for £6.85 a month for 1st year, this offer started from the photography show in Brum and extends until end of may.

No. Elements is for stills only but you might find a boxed set with Premiere (the movie equivalent to PSE) included. Sometimes special offers on Amazon.

I would recommend everybody to start with lightroom. It does almost everything I want, and importantly manages your photos (AKA catalogue management or DRM). This is important!
