Can anyone advise if this is a good starter camera? i am taking a course shortly to show me how to use a camera propley.....its really for taking nature shots and pics of family and friends. any advice or suggestions welcome.

no doubt be bk with lots more questions lol thanks wendy,x:)

Hi Wendy, :welcome: to TP

The Sony A230 is a great wee first camera - I've got the older A200 and it's nice and easy to use and produces pretty good images straight out the camera. You can get the A230 slightly (the cost of the postage) cheaper at John Lewis too :)

Great starter camera, and has all the bells and whistles you'll need as a beginner!

But....I'd try and handle one first to see if feels nice in your hands, the shape and feel of those new Sony's is little bit marmite! or  I love the the older entry level Sony's but the new ones just don't feel right to me :shake:

Seems a pretty good entry camera for a Newbie, you'll need a long telephoto zoom for Nature at some stage so take that into account after or during your course. At some stage you'll want a lens with a large maximum aperture too trust me :)

One thing i would say and it's always a personal thing it helps to pick up different cameras to get a feel for them as others will no doubt agree with.

Have a look HERE for a in-depth review of the camera. Seems a good starter camera! You can also get a dual lens kit, with a 55-200mm lens which would make better sense if you can afford it, as you will tire of the short focal length kit lens VERY quickly!

thanks all for the replys.
I really am lost as to if this is the one for me...i have been all over today having a feel and hold to see how i get on......know the lenses i will have to resort to buying second hand for now....just looking for a good starter kits with all i need till i can afford ad ons so any advice welcome and thanks again.

hi wendy and welcome to tp  don,t forget to add in the price of a memory card hth mike

The best advice I can give when it comes to buying a new dSLR:
Find a friend who already has one, along with some kit.
Buy the same brand.

Being able to borrow kit from friends is singly the most important thing when it comes to "which camera", as almost all the SLR's around the same price points deliver similar performance.

I dont really know anyone around where i live......and all my friends that i do know think i am mad to spend so much on a mere camera :shake:
But its something i have always been intrested in and my trusy digital has done me proud but now feel its the next step i need to take so in my case its will just be lonley old me lol but thats good advice thanks wendy.x

Does it HAVE to be new? Some good, bargain, starter DSLRs on the forum here! You don't have to have a high post count to buy either!

Thought of a bridge camera?

Near to SLR like performance, with many more features and great zoom capability so you can keep your hand out of your pocket so ou don't spend on lenses and all that.

They will still have manual controls, and all the principles of a DSLR are there, but without the financial commitment.

Or buy a good used body from here.

That seems like great value for money when compared to equivalent Canon/Nikon models.

It really depends on your budget and whether you want new or used....

so am i better with a bridge camera? oh i am confussed lol wendy.

We have a DSLR but I decided that a bridge camera would also be ideal for various situations that a DSLR might be deemed to large & bulky for.
I read alot of reviews about the panasonic DMZ 35/38 & borrowed one from a friend, the images proved to be shockingly good in automatic mode!
The controls are very easy to navigate around & use & it was cheap!

well after alot of reading i am looking at the panasonic fz38 bridge camera, as it stands i cant afford all the lenses that i would need for an slr....or can i oh i dont know i am so confussed i have around £300 to spend then i can buy extras at a later date.....but really am a beginner so maybe a bridge would be better lol....to many choices lol.......
thanks all for your replys wendy.:cuckoo:

Hi Wendy
Just my tuppence worth, but if you would be looking to buy 2nd hand lenses then a sony is probably not the way, there is a real shortage of these lenses around 2nd hand, you can use old minolta lenses but again the fact that you can use these on sony alpha cameras has pushed the price right back up again.
