Hi, I hope I am ok to ask a few basic question in here, I am sure there will be many more to come.

I have just purchased Nikon D60,( my first DSLR camera) and I would like to start with a few basic questions.

1 Is it ok to leave the lens on the camera in a bag, or best to detach to lens until you want to use it?

2 Many of my photo's will be sport/beach orientated, are there any precautions I should take using this camera on a windy beach, ie is it best not to change lenses etc on the beach

3 I have seen the word RAW bantered about, this is something new to me, I understand that the photo will be huge, but what are the advantages of using RAW over a Jpeg.

Cheers

It's fine to leave the lens on the camera.

Camera +wind + sand = problems!

Sand will get everywhere. Would it be possible to wrap the camera in a plastic bag, leaving just the lens poking out - protected by a filter, of course!

Seriously, if you get sand inside the lens it could be a repair job.

RAW will enable you to get the best possible results from your files. Think of them like digital negatives, which you can use your software to "develop".

would you recommend a clear filter, just as a lens protection

Thanks for your answers

Someone (Jack The Hat, perhaps ) was doing the op/tech ones for a fiver. I had one of those big rain cover ones, but they're a bit cumbersome so you end up leaving them behind, the opt/tech ones (or a plastic bag) are a better option
