Newbie question RE: Canon TTL Flash

I'm not even sure if the terminology is correct.

I have a 650D with an onboard flash as well as a Speedlite 430EX.

Now, setting up external flash with zones etc. I can make my camera fire off the Speedlite off camera, so long as I have my flash up.

What I can't seem to do is just use the Speedlite without the flash on my camera. Is this a possibility?

It was indeed a stupid question - after reading the manual, I see that the onboard flash is firing pre-shutter and is just for sync.

If the flash works the same way as the 7d, then you have the choice to either use it just for sync/control, or sync/control+group fire
