Hi folks, I'm looking into buying my first flashgun and would like to be able to use it off camera via the ebay triggers I have been reading about. Am I correct in thinking that in order to do this I need to get one that has both manual function and the TTL function?

The two I have been looking at are the Jessops budget ones, the 300AFD and the 360AFD but I"m not so sure the AFD has a manual function.

So basically I'm wondering which one would be usable for what I want or would both/neither be any good for me. I do realise there that there are much better ones out there but even going for the 360 it is breaking my budget a bit unfortunately so hoping the cheaper 300 would be ok.

Ok enough of my mad rambling, look forward to your replies and advice.

If you're going to use ebay triggers then ttl won't work, all you need is one that has adjustable manual settings, although you can use the likes of the 300 (which only has one power setting) and use the aperture on your camera to adjust the exposure instead.

I got 2 300AFD's this morning and can say they DO work with ebay triggers.

They also have built in optical slave so if you get more than one, you can fire one with the ebay trigger and the other(s) will fire when it "sees" the first one, great if you only have 1 receiever with your triggers.

You CAN'T adjust the power of them, but I have some lee gels (from the free swatchbook they sent me)... and if you stick the Neutral Density gels over the flash, it will reduce its power, if you want them on different power setting etc, or you can just adjust you aperture as flash says.

Its not the ideal set-up, granted, but if you're on a tight budget, it certainly does the job for now!!

You can get the lee filters swatchbook free if you go to their website and contact them.

Great stuff guys, thanks loads for the responses. I just had a look at the various triggers and receivers on Ebay and I think I may have got a bit of information overload from trying to take in all the different stuff on offer. :(

Is this the kind of thing I should be looking for a setup with my Canon 400D and 2 off camera 300AFD's?

I really do feel a bit daft asking what is probably simple questions but feel this is the only forum that I'm actually comfortable doing so, most of the others would just ignore me or talk down to me.

Regards
Tommy.

And remember you can get CTR-301 'P' receivers now, which have a PC socket also if required (other than that they are the same as the standard CTR-301 receivers and are interchangable.
