Hi All,

Newbie here to photography, i have had a SLR for a few years now however, i have never got round to learning how to use it, other than the odd picture here and there on auto & manual.

I currently have a 20-30mm and a 50-300mm lens (i think?) and a tripod.

My question to you all is: What other accessories or lenses should i look to add? And what post-production software?

My interests are Landscape, Wildlife and Cars. Once i get the knowledge and experience of using my camera a bit more i would love to take some Night-photography pictures. Please see below for a few of picture i have taken so far (they are yet to be edited).

Any advice and critique will be most welcomed.

Love the first dog pic... really do like that..

Now this is going to sound simplistis at first.. but it really is the best advice I ever got.... dont worry about what to buy next.. what you need to do is get out and take pictures.... all the time... experiment with your settings after finding out the basics and go take pictures.. then go take more pictures.. then some more... seriously the more pictures you take the more you will learn and one day everyhting will click into place...... every chance you get... go take pictures.. anywhere anytime :)

Great advice, thank you. :) I will spend the rest of this morning using the search tool then i think i will get out and take some photos, make the most of the rare sunny UK weather. Thanks!

Agree with Tony it's the only thing to do, and you are of course lucky to be in the digital age where it costs only your time. Years ago for me when shooting slide film at £8 a roll it was a bit more expensive to "shoot shoot shoot".

I must say my photography improved leaps and bounds when I turned digital, just because I could see what I was doing as I went along, and whereas on film I might take a shot or three and walk away I will now take as many as I think I need to properly explore or "work" the subject as some people term it.

Good luck, and get some more pictures on here for us to look at.

Oh, and I like the first dog picture as well.

David

Yip, I agree with all that. Take a lot of photographs, get some experience, and learn what gives the results you want. Ask questions on these forums, and read (books/internet articles) about what interests you. There's no need to buy more gear right now. Your camera and lenses will be fine for a while anyway, and future needs/wants will largely define themselves as your photography develops. Most of all, enjoy it!

Thank you all for the advice, i think the only items i will purchase any time soon are a good book to get me started and a filter as i also want to try some long exposures - however, my main priority will be out taking photo's :)

Hi and welcome to TP - Excellent advise so far. I think we can get too hooked on the 'buying stuff' and thinking that will improve our photography without ever getting to the bottom of what actually makes improvement .......... the photographer themselves. Enjoy the learning and taking pictures :D

Look forward to seeing you around

What helped me lots was A Sites like this one just reading the forums and looking at other peoples shots. B YouTube there are 1000's of great video's on techniques and post processing on you there. I love the shots you have put up keep at it and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thank you for your kind words and advice - i shall give Youtube a visit.

Many thanks

Rich

[edited: See below picture i took earlier experimenting with Aperture, Shutter Speed and source of lighting i.e mobile phone. Pretty pleased with my first time efforts, considering the room was brightly-lit with sunshine. I feel as if the glare off of the join from the wooden floor could be removed though.]

Hi and welcome :welcome:

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes.

I have set myself a 30 day challenge of taking a picture or two everyday for 30 days. No specific topic, i just thought it would be a good way for me to get out there taking photos... (or around the house - so far!). Could someone advise what part of the forum i could document this?
