Hi, I'm Alexandra. I'm originally from Guildford in Surrey but now reside in Hartlepool.
I'm 30 and enjoy photography with my partner Lee.
He convinced me to join the forum (always have reservations as i don't like keyboard warriors.)
so here I am.
I have been shooting since I was 18. Started with Nikon. Went over to canon for a year or so but then switched back.
I shoot at the moment with a d810. I love all sorts of photography and have a soft spot for owls and birds of prey and aviation.

I'm currently on maternity leave until July so have a bit of free time to take more images. I love to travel and my dream is to photograph the Northern lights in a nice setting (I got a pic here in hartlepool a few months ago, but not quite the same is it?).

I also shoot studio stuff, Reptiles etc. We have converted our loft into a small studio. I prefer to be out and about though.

I work in a place that sells car parts over 50 hours a week. and shoot weddings on the side as a business. Also sell my prints online.

I'm pretty much a what you see is what you get person. Hoping when I return to work to save up for a longer lens now i have returned to full frame. (longest I own is a 200mm non VR) I also have a 105mm macro, and old 85mm 1.8 Ai which I adore and a Russian 16mm non circular fisheye). I really miss my Nikon 14-24mm for landscapes but will hopefully add one to my collection when I return from leave. (Usually hire for when I have an event to do.)

Look forward to speaking to some of you.

Though I am regretting coming here after the way I was spoken to in my first post in the bird section.

That's normal for that section of the forum, and a very good reason to avoid that section. But generally the rest of the forum is much better behaved.. and if you pop the "usual suspects" from the birding section onto your Ignore list that section can be a lot more pleasant. It is always worth reporting unpleasant posts (bottom left below an individual post) as eventually the management might do something about it - @Marcel @TheBigYin @Yv (to pick three at random)

Welcome on-board.. I hope your stay is more pleasant than your first experiences.

Thanks, I kind of wish one of my passions was not birds of prey so oi could avoid that area. it must put a lot of people off from joining these forums though. Thanks for the heads up and I'm sure I will enjoy the other area's. :)

I've had a look at your first thread, that forum does tend to go very harsh on anything they don't perceive as "perfect" - and are equally harsh on each other as a group as they are with those outside their clique, they just don't recognise that anyone outside the clique might not want the same aggressive tone of feedback that they use to banter amongst themselves. If it's a shot with known faults it might be better putting it into the "Photos - General photo feedback" or maybe the "Photos - Wild and free" section.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Ah is the wild and free section for anything goes then?

Welcome to the forum (both of you), birds are my interest too but I'm not such a perfectionist as some and accept that a bird I choose to photograph may not realise he's supposed to stand or display in a certain way ... take it on the chin :D

NO, please. Put birds in the bird section and leave wild and free in relative tranquility..........:)

You`ll soon get used to the bird section.......;)

Welcome Alexandra. You soon learn to ignore the numpties, so dont let them put you off.

Looking forward to seeing some of your shots.

Cheers

welcome to TP- avoid the Know it all gang and you'll be fine

Les

Hi Alexandra and welcome and just remember that the best photographers know that they don't know it all and they can always learn something new so just ignore the numpties and enjoy being here.
.

welcome and yes its best to ignore certan numpties found lurking in birds - ive just looked at that thread though and I would say that you didnt help yourself by reacting very defensively to what was actually quite a helpful first response from Bill

the usaual suspects then smelt blood in the water and the whole thing went down the tubes

I was defensive because it was like he had not even read my first post, in which I had explained that I know the composition was wrong. Yet he told me how to compose the picture when I had already explained. [emoji6]

he was right though - moving it to the right would have made for a stronger picture (although you'd have lost most of the gorse bush, its presumably meant to be a pic of the bird so the bush is ancillary) - end of the day you posted for crit, bill gave you crit, not just on the composition. ade was also right when he said you needed to be closer so you didnt crop as much as 100% crops rarely result in great pics

the problem with coming across as defensive is we get a lot (and i'm not saying you are one such) of people who post for crit but only really want smoke blowing up their arse about how great mediocre shots are, thus someone who argues with the first time anyone makes any constructive comment it tends to be a bit of a red rag to a bull - and result in an unleashing of various other muppets who just live for an argument

He was right indeed. I never had any chance to get closer though which I had explained. I didn't want anyone to say it was good I was just showing a pic that I personally liked even if it wasn't technically correct.

Hi Alexandra, And welcome aboard TP, looking forward to hearing from you and maybe seeing some of your images on the various forums."Enjoy".

TP is a funny place - some fantastic advice and some incredible rudeness, sometimes from the same person. After a bit you get to know those who badly lack social skills, and if you can't take their comments with a pinch of salt then the ignore button is good. ;) The bird section does tend to be VERY blunt on occasion, and I stay out of there. The other hot-button topic is art>>craft, though if you're lucky you'll remain an innocent bystander.

:)

I have one person trolling my threads now though. I guess I won't be coming back if the mods won't do anything about it. It's a shame as i had a lot to contribute. I've pressed ignore but on the app they still appear. I use the app a lot because I have a five month old son and it's easier to just reply on my phone.

I have this problem as well, so I just started using the browser on my phone instead of the app, so that I didn't have to read the drivvle that some were writing. The site is very mobile friendly, so hopefully you can stick around.

I've deleted my posts now because of all the rubbish being posted at me. Now if I can just find a delete account button.

There's no delete account button - it's in the terms of the site - and it would be a shame if you're going so soon. Have you talked with a mod at all? They aren't full time, so they might not have been able to get back to you yet.

I'm glad to see the offending person has been banned. At least I can now post without being troubled.

Good, don't be put off by the actions of a few- there are many helpful members within this forum

Les
