Hi guys,

New to the site and jumping straight into the deep end here. Here is a link to my website that I just set up in the past couple of weeks.
http://digipics.fpic.co.uk/
I am open to helpful criticism, and any comment would be appreciated on the website and especially on the pictures

Regards

James

With only a quick glance the site looks exceptionally busy.

A few things that spring straight to mnid is that the photo in the background appears to be split so it repaeats at the bottom of the page rather than fitting the page nicely, the colours aer very 'in your face' and there aer not to many shots on the front page but links to them. It may be better simplifying the front page to draw peoples attention in and maybe a thumbnail for each gallery to give people an idea of what is in them.

There are a lot fo good tog websties out there and tbh (sorry if you feel unfair) but I would not go any further than the front page...

+1.

I'm afraid I clicked in, saw how busy it was and left again

Agree with above.

Get rid if that wall in the background.

the site is very busy and can you change the colour scheme the the red and yellow doen`t work for me. try looking round the web for sites that are the same sort as you want yours to be

Cheers Steve

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to say I agree with the above, less is more I feel.

Your site does not encourage me to look at the photo's which I guess is the point of the site in the first place.

Things I would suggest, I'm no website expert by the way but I know what I like.

Lose the background image, make it a plain clean colour, the photo's will stand out more.
Take your latest photo as an example, the one of the Gibbon, when you look at the actual photo page it is not possible to read the description due to the background image.

Structure the front page with you 'Welcome' message at the top centre, at the moment it looks more like an advert from your host provider on the side of the page.

Stick around here, you'll get loads of friendly advice.

Paul.

Doesn't hurt my eyes as much as version1.
Still very busy though.

Can you not have a simple MENU and a picture or slideshow on the homepage?
The Menu can be on the lines of: Gallery 1, About, Purchase, Contact, etc...

Hi. Sorry, James. I feel the layout is not working for me. I feel confused by all those boxes and no obvious navigation. The pics are too small and some repeat for no obvious reason. If this is a template, I'd suggest you look at using a different one.

From a design POV, your eye is not naturally lead to any point of the page.
the modular system really takes away from your photography.

IMO, id start from scratch

:plusone:

I'm not overly keen on all the different boxes with different content in, it all looks a little unbalanced and untidy. The navigation system needs to be improved (maybe a horizontal or vertical menu/navigation layout).

I'd also like to know how much your work is going to cost to purchase before I click on the 'buy prints' button and then having to scroll through the various size/finish options to find that info out, so maybe a dedicated 'Price' page might be worth considering? Also, and I'm no expert when it comes to VAT (or accounting in general for that matter), but do you need to charge VAT? Thought you only need to do that if you are registered for VAT etc??

Would also be nice to see an 'About' page so that potential customers know a bit about you and your photography.

Finally, the 'rate this photo' idea doesn't quite work for me, sorry!

You asked about the pictures- sorry, they are pretty dire in my opinion..

Thanks guys, your comments have been gratefully received.
To answer some questions:-
The website itself was a low budget thing, and I don’t have the time or the know how, to create my own independent website. So it may be a losing battle, but I am trying to make the most of what I got :bang:
In relation to the selling of pictures, it’s a feature supplied by the host of the website, and this is a big if, if there is a chance of making money its worth a try.

The pics are too small
Are we talking thumbnails here or the actual picture pages or even the actual pictures themselves?

Hi James, yes I did mean the 'thumbnails' although I didn't at first realise they were thumbnails that linked anywhere - that's part of the problem with the page. There's just too much to take in. I think the best idea might be to try and simplify the whole layout.

According to the host, my current thumbnail choice is “huge.” Thinking about it, they do look a bit small:|
