Hi all
Off to the big apple at the end of the month. Anyone been and know of any hidden secrets out there to shoot. Want to find some non-touristy snaps if pos.

Phil

@Philpalmer Surprised you didn't get any replies to this! Did you manage to find lots of locations? I've just booked to go in May next year and am super excited. Trying to find good photo spots in the city but I suspect that pretty much the whole city will be a good spot!

Your right, the whole city is a great location. I particularly liked going up the Rockefeller at night, gives you amazing views of the city all lit up inc the Empire State and the world trade in the background. Liberty Island ferries are great and cheap. Get you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, great shots from the boat looking back at Manhattan. Central Park is also brill for some shots, we went at Xmas so the place was all lit up. I wish I had got more 'street' shots with the subway steam coming up through the drains.

Also the big red bus tours take you down some side streets you may not walk down for some less iconic 'new York' snaps. A must would be taking a stroll across Brooklyn bridge too.

(Possibly not great for taking some shots but I recommend 'The View', it's a rotating restaurant above the Marriott hotel in Times Square. Pre book online).

I also wish I had got some subway shots but we only rode it once.

Book yourself some basketball or ice hockey tickets too, both times I've been I've seen the Knicks, most recently Knicks vs Brooklyn which was electric.

Oh and don't give any money to the dressed up characters in Times Square. I made that mistake because I didn't want to get shot but there's signs saying not to give them money!

Try a long exposure in Grand Central station, that'll look cool with the amount of people buzzing around, just sit your camera on the ledge at the top of the stairs. I tried....failed :-(.

If you get the chance to go either to New Jersey or Brooklyn then no doubt there'll be some great spots to shoot back into Manhattan.

We also loved the 9/11 museum, very emotional but certainly worth the visit.

Again we pre booked this before we went but Aladdin on Broadway is phenomenal!

Just remember, up the Empire State in the day and Rockefeller at night!

I'm not jealous at all that your both going.....(browsing Virgin holidays as we speak...)

Greenwich Village is great. All the apartment blocks with the classic fire escapes and some great boutique shops that ooze character.

I went xmas 2013, and plan a return trip next xmas. I typically went into full tourist mode, with top of the Rock/empire state and liberty island etc.

plenty of spots around though, although I would suggest being careful where you have your possessions on show. So many strange characters about, especially on the mta tube

I wouldn't worry as there are so many tourists with cameras. Been three times and whilst there are some strange characters about I've never felt worried- no different to London.
Greenwich Village, Meatpacking district, Chelsea are all favourites of mine. We had lunch in Harlem one day (Sylvia's) and there are certainly some interesting characters there!!

I must add, you're not allowed to take a tripod with you up the top of the Rock, empire state or the new world trade centre. It gets taken off you at the security desk then given back after

Top of the Rock were fine with my table-top tripod - but I do use micro-four thirds gear so it's all small enough they don't care! Just plonk it on one of the big stone pillars.

The High Line is a nice walk with some good views.

There's a new(ish) viewpoint at the top of the WTC tower, great views but you're behind glass up there. Same as before, little table-top tripod was fine on the window sill.

The view back from the shore at Dumbo to Manhattan is excellent!

Staten Island ferry's a good free view of South Manhattan.

There's a cable-car over to Roosevelt Island I didn't get to try this trip - think it might have good midtown views...will report back if I ever get on it!

The cable car trip is a good experience but not great for photography given the scratched windows, movement of the car and other obstructions. Well worth going though.

I've booked to go in January, do you know if I need to book the statue of Liberty now or should I just book it when I get there?

Any advice on trips and when to book them would be appreciated.

I would book the Statue of Liberty here, in advance. It is a very busy place. I've been a few times myself different parts of the year and it's always busy.

Amazing view of the Manhattan skyline is at Brooklyn Park. A must in my opinion. Stunning views and quite peaceful. Not that busy in the evenings.
