I am off to New York on Thurs and I was wondering if anyone had any serect places which are good for getting some great pics :D

There are so many cool little cafes and stuff like that it's almost worth walking from midtown to Greenwich...

I also love Grand Central Station, too...

Grand Central Station is great.

I preferred the views from Empire State building to Top of the Rock, but I'm obsessed with the Chrysler building. I'd love to do some night shots from either, and they day time views aren't bad!

A friend of mine went here http://www.thehighline.org/about/park-information and she had some pretty funky pictures.

The exterior of the Guggenheim Museum is pretty cool, hopefully it's not covered in scaffolding like it was last time I went :( http://www.guggenheim.org/ They were quite awkward about interior photography though.

There's some really iconic buildings in New York, such as the Flatiron, Empire State, Chrysler Tower, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square.

There's also some really quirky things there, like all the fire hydrants being painted in italian flag colours in Little Italy, some great people watching opportunities in Central Park and Bryant Park.

If time is short, visit the Empire State late in the day for daylight pics and wait till sun goes down for night shots, saves on entrance fees too.

If you want to get some "classic" views of New York.

Go to Brooklyn Heights

Best deal in Manhattan - the Staten Island Ferry (Free) takes you past the Statue of Liberty

and you get this view looking back at Manhattan

Sorry none of these are "secret places" but to me they are the must do's if this is a first visit to New York.

As maninsuitcase says Top of the Rock is great - partly because you can get nice shots of the Empire State Building and partly due to the fact they have big plexiglass walls with gaps for cameras

One of the nice things about NYC is that it has been in so many TV shows and films that you almost feel you know the place. The whole city is great for photography IMHO!

battery park has some good opportunities and you can do it when you do the ferry, the carousel in central park, the bull just off wall st, some great cathedrals and windows, alice in wonderland in central park, met museum and the public library behind bryant park, and all the others mentioned, watch for the police driving round at the end of the shift with lights and sirens on it makes a great pic as does the lines of yellow cabs at the lights on 5th & 6th.
oh and look up some of the buildings are great.
enjoy its a great place to be

Thanks guys.... I have just been looking at all the links and pics and I am very excited now and I hope I can get at least one pic as good as some I have seen :)

The whole place is a photo waiting to be taken, I love it.

I was there last April and had my stay extended by 6 nights due to the volcano.

You will love it, keep looking up as everything is so big.

Edited to say, I see you have already been, must read all the post before replying. :bonk:

Haha I was gonna say I have already been :)

I have taken some pics and popped them of Flickr :D

Not many people know about the Franklin D. Roosevelt Island cable car, you get some great views of Manhattan as you cross the river in the cable car. I don't remember anything significant on the Island, but it's well worth the trip just for the river crossing.

Have a great trip.

Chris
