Hi everyone.
I'm off to New York at the end of August for a week, and was just wondering if anybody had any good tips or advice on where / when / what to shoot? I'm interested in the usual cliche tourist shots, but also want to try and get some extraordinary, unusual shots.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance :)
Darren

Good opportunity for a bit of candid "street" togging but keep to the main streets.

I felt safer walking the streets of New York than London. Just try and blend in, having walked the streets of Brooklyn I've met some great people and never felt intimidated, not something I can say for the eastend of London.

I have never been to New York Nigel but felt after suggesting a bit of street somewhere I have not had experience of I would play safe by adding that.

I loved a walk around little italy and china town, loads of street stuff to snap ;)

Has Alicia Keys' song been done to death yet, for the slideshow?

Three from me (we go every year, love it)

1. Coney Island. Such a unique and strange place, only costs a subway ride to get there and is a wonderful place to just stroll the boardwalk people watching. We always go in winter (where it's even stranger due to how quiet/abandoned it all seems) but would love to see it in summer.

2. Walk everywhere. Subway to Coney Island aside we walk absolutely everything, tiring but completely worth it. We usually aim to do a Downtown day, a Central Park area day etc etc, up and out by 7am just soaking it all up. You will see amazing things, last time alone we were on the scene of a suicide attempt, walked through film sets, were on live TV in a weather report and found brilliant quirky shops.

3. Top of the Rock wins versus Empire State Building in the observation platform battle. If you only do one, do TotR

As mentioned above it feels much safer than London. He missus happily popped out to a few shops alone in the evening. We've been so many times we always look for different streets and avenues to walk along instead of the most obvious/direct ones and we've never once felt unsafe.

There has been quite a few threads on this recently, so it may be worth a search.

Helloooooo, I was there last month... keep looking up, thats all I will say :D

I have some pics on my Flicker if you want to see some of the places :)

+1 for Top of the Rock. Way better than Empire State in terms of queues, and you can get a picture with the Empire State in it. We did Empire State too, but I preferred Rockefeller.

Thanks everyone. Some places I'll definitely have to give a go there. Ill have to post some of the shots I take when I get back

echo most of the comments above although we did have a bit of an unnerving incident on the subway ( very threatening drunk guy). But quite happily walked along the streets at night with wife and two kids and felt safe.
