The wife has given me permission to pop over to New York for a few days later this year and I'm trying to work out the best time to go. the previous time I went was at the end of October/early November, but now I'm thinking of going late November/Early Dec. The Rockefeller lights are being turned on on November 30th, has anyone been for this? Will it be ridiculously busy and worth avoiding?

The thought of Christmas in New York sounds great, my provisional dates were 2-5 December (May make that 5-8 to avoid weekend crowds) but if it's going to be worth going a few days earlier for the switching on of the lights then I'll do that instead.

One of the busiest and most expensive times to goto New York..

Why not :D

Busy is good for xmas shots but bring a step ladder. Height is your friend :) ..... and buy the wife a very nice pressie ...... its just not worth the risk of not doing it. Remember the Nikon lens's and the ex-girlfriend?

It will be busy, but a great opportunity for photo's as well as capturing the atmosphere.

Go for it and make sure you go skating at the rockafella ice rink - amazing at Christmas!

Early December is a great time to be in NYC. The switch on at the Rock is cool is not so busy you'd want to avoid the area all together (unlike Times Sq on New Year's Eve!), but as with any crowd, you might struggle to get a good shot unless you have some sort of elevation advantage.

Also, there's usually a light show display at Sachs on 5th, which is directly opposite the Rock.

I'm going on Thurs... Whooooooooooooooooooooooooo... sowwy :)

Been twice first week in December was nice, but wrap up it can get cold -21 I beleive I have a photo of somewhere. and the other time was 1st January.

I Want to go back this year.

hi check the date for the lights switch on because its a week or so after thanksgiving, we went for thanks giving last year and shopping on black friday, you will get to see macys parade. But have to say i was suprised how nusy it was that weekend compared to when we spent a week there in the summer. You will get the ice rink shots though and the window displays. most of the decorations go out the week after thanks giving with some being out that weekend but not all.
It was cold and windy so a good coat is a must and a flexible friend ha ha
