more of joke than anything else

is it serious in today's world

How does a blonde bird (once married to a gangster) most famous for getting her baps out in a documentary about camping get a gong?

Nice to see Tony McCoy from this neck of the woods getting recognised.

Some deserved, some not. Same old, same old.

Yup - apparently their Twitter said

BBC Breaking News ‏@BBCBreaking 8 mins8 minutes ago

The BBC News website is currently experiencing some technical issues. We are working as quickly as possible to resolve them.

And this was shortly after 9am - relayed to me by a Pal

I didn't know him personally, but I see there is a bloke that I used to see regularly in the gym at work. It came as a bit of a shock when he announced to his mates he was leaving Ford to become an actor. He's done quite well for himself over the years since. Good luck to him on getting his OBE, I'd say.

Well I'd certainly give her one
(well a few years ago anyway :D )

When you get into the right circles people are all nominating each other. I don't mean the national celebrities, but like heads of various organisations, police chiefs and managers, heads of county/city council departments, civil servants... generally people that have given a lot of years in public service but a lot of those characters all have honours and are expected to do so to be the same as their peers. I've just seen it happen, a person appointed head of a new rustled up organisation, nominated by a prominent person, and within a few months of taking charge the person has a new years honour the same as others at that level. I always think they are a little unfair anyway. I'm not particularly a fan of Bruce Forsyth but he made the national smile for about 50 years before getting a 'Sir' yet others get it much quicker. Others of course clearly buy their way by making significant donations to politicians etc. Of course I'm only envious... :-)

If there has to be an honour's list (many a banana republic would envy the system) then there should also be a dis-honours list for those who have been a complete aerosol for a large part of their lives. Fit them up with a ball and chain.

Haha!!!

TP HONOUR LIST! Could be amusing

I couldn't give a rat's ars.....
Doesn't affect me one little bit.
Many many more honours are given to folks you've never heard of, for all sorts of reasons.
It's sad that people seem to just want a bit of a whine about the "celebrity" recipients.

I agree, there is some young guy from Kent who has been awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) for raising over £200K for the Bobby Moore Cancer charity.

Only 13 years old - well done lad!

The Companion of the Star of Melanesia is awarded for distinguished service of the highest degree to Papua New Guinea, I think that it is the second highest honour awarded by Papua New Guinea and not awarded to many people.

Two of the notable recipients are HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, (wife of HRH Prince of Wales) and Stan Joyce, General Manager of the South Pacific Brewery

It is not celebrities and Charity workers that are "moaned" about - it is the honours given to some of the people mentioned in BlackClouds post above ...... a significant number of whom have performed poorly and have always expected to get a seat on the honours gravy train

Blimey, there's quite a few "honourable" people out there ;)
The full list is HERE if you CanBA to read it

Maybe Jacqueline Gold? Doesn't actually say that it's for bringing satisfaction to many women, but I think we all know that anyway ....... (only one smiley suitable I think!)
:D

We should never lose sight of the fact that there are some very deserved people who have received honours, some real unsung heroes on the lower rungs of the ladder in organisations but too many are just those mixing in the right circles. It makes you wonder how many nominations are refused. For many people there's no route to an honour unless you happen to have achieved something for your country or helped the local youths for twenty five years. Lots of those awards are for being in academia, research or the right sort of public organisation where all the people who are likely to be able to nominate you also exist. There are many deserving cases but sadly the credibility seems to be dwindling with bad press about cash donors and people employed to put a party in power. On the latter point, politics aside, but Crosby didn't even do a good job. The vote was something like 36% of voters, 64% voted against. I know that's the system we have, but you can't say it was a convincing campaign.

Absolutely, and these are the ones that should be top of the list

Agreed - there are many who will expect to be given an honour as a "right" just because of the desk they sit behind ....... not only politicians ........ such honours are useful in their career and financial progressions

Think she should at the bottom of the list IMO plenty more people out there ,like the unsung heroes that actually make a difference to peoples quality of life . Like the Johnny Depps of this world . Yeh he's a multimillionaire and all that but he has compassion and hasn't forgotten where he came from .
For someone who basically sells knickers and bras to be given an honour is a complete joke IMO of course .

Maybe my idea of who should on the honors list is way wide of the mark... As i said earlier who gives a flying ...F.....

Sounds like she is doing a lot to "Support" women to me :D
(some more than others no doubt :D)

As i said earlier who gives a flying ...F.....
At the end of the day, this /\ /\ /\

I hear Tesco will be selling them next year.

Many who got one deserved it, many deserved one who didn't get, too many got one for the wrong reasons, that and the idea that you can buy one to order just demeans the whole thing.

Such negativity in here, I've seen first hand the effect it has on many to be awarded the various honours. All that I know were indeed just being themselves, and just doing their job; they'd be the first to admit that. Well good for them, why not focus on that and celebrate them.

They should get rid of the honours system, it simply perpetuates the 'establishment' and is a hangover and relic from the days of empire.

As for Camoron giving one to his mate Crosby, that's simply an abuse of the system.

Simon Weston gets a CBE for his charity work and Lenny Henry gets a knighthood...
That highlights the farce right there for me personally.

My mate Paul Basset made it onto the honors list (QAM), well deserved as well

My sister got one last year for 30 years volunteer work, although I tell her it's for knitting. She does use it on everything including birthday cards.
