Ive finally got a website together.:D For ages ive been meaning to put together a website that not only acts as a showcase for my work, but also offers expandability for the future. I started coding it about 2 weeks ago and I knew nothing about any web programming, so im pleased with what ive managed to put together. Ive done a bit of testing and there are a couple of bugs/quirks that I need to sort, but if anyone comes across anything that should be changed or fixed then please say so. Without further ado, I present my website;

http://www.afowler.co.uk
:)

You should be pleased with that especially as you have no web experience!!!

The only criticism I had was the moving macro of the fly on the banner which might put off some people.

Who are you hosting with if you don't me asking?

Cheers,

Bob

Okay initial thoughts:

I have all this space on my screen and the website seems to be squashed into a quarter in the middle? Seems to small for me. I like the colour scheme, black always appeals.

Thumbnails are tiny, unless its just me? I find myself straining to see what the pictures are before I click to open them.

The pictures are great mind, and the sideshow feature is nice too.

Looking good, Alisdair . There're a few smelling pistakes here and there (6th from college), but the design is clean. It's a personal view, but I find white text on black too moody. It fits in with the seascapes, but seems a little out of kilter with the more colourful macro and animal shots (love the puffins, BTW).

A pretty good web presence, though. Be prepared for disappointed Eastenders fans visiting ;)

+1 to what Mikharper said.

One quirk I've found (i'm using firefox), if I'm in a gallery looking a picture and click the 'home' tab, nothing hapens, to get back to the gallery main page (apart from scrolling back) I had to click on any of the other tabs and than back on the home tab.

Looking good MK, except it's stopped working for me, I don't think I've got anything blocking it.
I was skipping merrily through the pages and your pic's then I clicked the Home button and it won't click :(
in the bottom bar on Firefox it says;

javascript:ajaxpage('Home.html',contentarea');showBlock('block')

It was working.:'(

First of all, well done Messiah Khan. If you have achived this in your first go then its pretty awesome.

Couple of things for me, im not 100% on the moving macro in the title banner. The thumb nails apear a little small for me also. The only other thing i would say is i may leave off the info about what camera and lenses you use, some people have certain opinions on particular brands and the people who use them and you dont want any of that nonsence getting in the way of your rather good images!!

Just my opinion.

Thank for all the comments and suggestions so far.:)

I can very easily change the images in the top bar, so thats something I will most likely change. I think colour landscapes probably work best so i'll dig some of them out.

I currently use easyspace for hosting, but the package is rubbish so i'll probably change once this one runs out.

What resolution is your screen? Ive designed the centre section to be 800 pixels wide, which means the site won't need horizontal scrollbars on anything over 800x600. I realise that it might appear a little small on some larger screens (Im currently using a 1920x1200 one) but I want to make it as accessible as possible and according to figures, 1024x768 is still the most common resolution by far.

Point taken about thumbnails, so ive now changed them a bit.

Fixed that spelling mistakes, thanks. I know what you mean, but I like the black and white look, although I might play around with a few colour schemes and see what I come up with.

If your looking at a picture, you can click on the 'gallery button in the slideshow window.' But I know what you mean and ideally I would want 'home' to take you back. but due to the way the site has been made (due to the constant top bar) the page never actually refreshes. The slideshow is actually always there, its just when you click on the menu links, it gets hidden or shown. I'll see if I can work out some solution though.

No idea whats happened there Susane.:( What happens if you refresh the page again?

Which macro one? The Ladybird or the fly? Or both? As mentioned I can change that easily enough. Ive sorted the thumbnails. And im a proud Nikonian. I see what your saying, but from my own point of view im always curious to see what kit other togs use so i'd like to include it on my own site.

:)

It's fine now MK!:D must have been a web ghostie.

Just one thing bugging me at the mo, ladybugs don't eat plants, so it can't "Eat your path". ;)

Good stuff. Ah, but does it literally mean eating your path, or does it have a deeper meaning?

Nice

Now give us the techie bit? what software U used etc etc :)

Cheers. Its based around monoslideshow for the flash content. Ive used 2 monoslideshow instances, one for the main gallery and one for the top banner. The main page is a html page, using css for the style etc. It then uses ajax and javascript to dynamically show the content from other html pages. This is what allows the top banner to keep going when new pages are loaded. Finally a bit of php is thrown in there for good measure, especially on the messages page as my hosting package doesn't have mysql support, meaning all the messages are stored in .txt files instead.

Ive now got to iron out a few bugs, then the next step is to try and implement some sort of news/blog feature, as well as an automated purchasing system. Ive got a Photobox pro account, but this isn't ideal so im looking for alternatives.

:)

fantasic looking site, and bleddy brilliant images
those seascapes are awesome - long exposures? is that why the rocks looks surrounded by mist rather than water?
exellent!

The problem with clicking the Home button is that you are already 'Home' the galleries are all on the home page. I too had a problem with that until I realised it, the way to get back to the index is to click the leftmost icon under the current image, I think these icons could be better labled (or even labeled at all as none shows up in Opera)

Apart from the size as mentioned above, I like the layout, the displayed image is really big enough even on my widescreen monitor but see my comment about lables for the gallery controls ^

Good effort and better than many I have seen, although it sounds like you are prepared to get the sleeves rolled up on the coding side which must help. Interested to see what you develop on the sales side.

I like the colour scheme BTW.

Thanks for the comments. I agree with you Steep, but im not sure if I can label the controls. All that part is controlled by monoslideshow which unfortunately hasn't got any tooltip function, although several other people are requesting it as well, and I have no idea where to start to implement that myself.

Silly me I totally didn't think about lower resolutions, good point well made MK. I also like seeing what other 'togs ( <-- like that term) use so I would like to see that stay.

Looks great but I cant get back to your home page with the link after going to any gallery.

javascript:ajaxpage('Home.html',contentarea');showBlock('block')

It was working.:'(

I also get this.
Apart from that its a cracking site well done.

Home does not work whilst I'm browsing through your pictures. But it works if I use any thing else on your menu. Hope this helps.
