New Web Site

does the gallery work- nothing came up for me - just a title
also the text is set to almost 100% across the screen - may want to reduce that to a centre area - but that would be a personal preference i guess

yes, i used the drop downs - but it did not open any images - your linked worked though
and tried the
event and speed awareness ride - and clicked on that - now it worked - but no other link did

That's the only link that has a gallery added, didnt want to go the whole hog if the average person didn't like the site.

Thanks for taking the time to view Etaf

get rid of the "Please feel free to explore this site and visit again soon we will be adding new items along the way. Thank you for visiting and hope to see you again soon. Darren Paul Photography" bit, serves no purpose and looks odd.

personally id like to see the text left justified.

not really sure on the styles page, bit of a wall of text. are people really going to be coming to your site to get explainations on types of photography?

only gallery that has images is the speed awareness one?

blog could do with some images?

I'm not struck on the image/file number popping up the way it does when you hover over thumbnails. Or at least change the colours of the box.

Cheers for that Benjamin.......... i will look in to trying to change that.

Like your site Benjamin, nice a clean.... what WP theme did you use and what gallery is that.

Darren.

Hi Darren. I would be inclined to have the site name all on one line. I'd also suggest making the paragraph text (body text) a bit smaller. I guess you still have to fill up your galleries. Liking the home page.

Cheers for the advice Carol... on my screen the site name is all on 1 line... and when i was at work on a smaller screen it was on 1 line.

I fully agree with the text, must have changed it yesterday in error.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Darren

A couple of minor points you have an about me page and a contact us page which sends slightly different messages.

The blog has a comment ability where name and E-amail is to be entered I think you need to think about what will show in the blog, As I would not add comments to a blog where my e-mail address would show. Also think how you would react deal with unsolicited or spam comment on the blog.

I like the front page photos, and see your comments about the website being aimed at friends and family and think the site works for that purpose.

Cheers for that Richard, I can see where you coming from with the about me and contact us. I will amend that, re blog. I plan to change that so people can't comment. As the site I mainly for family and friend they would more likely to phone me or message me on facebook. The idea of the site was to show my photos and if someone liked one to use or buy the option is there. I have been doing a few shoots at local events and been asked where they could view the photos - hence the new site, I felt that was the best option.

i would not see a problem - NOT a legal expert - companies buy up all sorts of domain names to ensure no one else can use them and they also buy all the domains
.com .co.uk .net .tv etc

as you are a photographer as well - i think the issue will be people going to dareenpaul and not your site
as i say not an expert here at all or cannot offer any legal advice

but you may lose work
although your in Manchester and hes in Brighton
Location and studio hire is also available in Brighton.

is this just a recent purchase ?

Yes.... i was thinking about giving him a call, but that might open a can of worms for myself

possibly - but may also solve any issues if people ring the wrong telephone number

you said the website was for friends and family - but now you have registered a business

will you be competing for UK wide / international work

The site was for friends and family, and if people wanted to buy prints i was going to sell them.... i registered the business name as you never know what might happen in the future.

As this moment in time i dont advertise my phone number.

i wont be competing for UK wide, just local...

Not working for me

Hi. Seems a bit unfortunate about the names, did you check that out before you bought your domain name? I guess if its your name, you have as much right to use it as the other Darren Paul has. However, if you are concerned about potential conflicts of interest - more likely searches going to the other site rather than yours - would it be worth thinking of another domain name? I think as long as you are not trying to deliberately imitate another business by deliberately confusing potential customers, there is no real issue. You might even get the other chap to 'buy' your domain from you (at a bit of a profit?).

Cheers Carol... I phoned him today and explained what i had done and what i was doing and he was all good about it, he didn't see any problems and he has an existing client list.... and only used the web site to let his client view his work. should have been cheeky and asked him to do me a web site..
Buying my domain name and company name..... nah i want them both... or do i

Have you taken the site down?

It seems odd to me that you've set up a website but don't want to be seen as a professional, yet you've registered a limited company name?

Registering as a limited company isn't something most small businesses do (by small - I mean sole trader/partnerships), and you've registered and have no plans to go into business:thinking:

But as you have prints for sale, i presume you've also registered as self employed with HMRC?

re. the name thing - there's another Photographer in Yorkshire called Phil Vaughan - he runs a studio in Ripon for which he uses a studio name. He doesn't use the internet for his business at all and I get loads of website traffic that's clearly looking for him.

It doesn't really make a difference to either of our lives, apart from the traffic I get that should be his - which is helping my Google rankings;)

Cheers Phil

I took the site down as not to cause any problems for myself with my namesake. but on reflection i didnt need to.
I am not a professional photographer, if anything just an enthusiastic armature.
I purchased the limited company name...... YBH just in case i become a better photographer in the future, company will be left inactive.
re self employed ---- NO do i need to...
I know i need to get some public liability insurance and i am looking for quotes at the moment.

Darren

The instant you sell a picture you have a potential tax liability.

If someone wants to do a few small cash in hand jobs, I'm not going to condone it, but I'm sure HMRC wouldn't be too worried. However, if you're advertising services for sale, you're taking it seriously, and so would they.

As a hobbyist, if you're typical, your buying habits will probably mean you'll need to pay little or no tax, but you should register and keep records.
