Well it's time once again to get a new tv and over the last 2/3 years things have changed quite a lot it would seem and It looks like it will have to be LED now as plasma sets seem almost as rare as rocking horse poop.

I don't need a 3d/smart set as I have Chromecast and a pvr though I realize many sets are smart these days. My main requirements are a 50/ 55" panel as preference but what concerns me is sport, in particular football and motion trails and although I don't watch a great many games I don't fancy the experience of the games I do watch spoiled.

The panel will be mainly used for films & tv programmes and not gaming, allotted budget will be up to £800 so looking for peoples experiences and/or recommendations please :-)

I was looking into something similar a while back. Samsung panels are supposed to be highly rated. Basic models tend to lack smart features.

Had a quick look on John Lewis and saw this:

Personally, search for models that fit your criteria (smart/not smart, 3d/no 3d, curved/straight) etc, and have a read on HDTV or AV forums or similar for reviews. Some of them go very in-depth into stuff like how they are for football.

I have the 48' version of the Samsung 6400 - it's awesome.
I don;t watch much footie, but watch a lot of rugby - no issues whatsoever. I don;t use the 3D, but the Smart features are really good. Plex streaming from my Mac is so simple - I no longer use my Chromecast. I got mine from JL - included 5-year warranty. Hard to fault....

Thanks for the help everyone!....I love Plex which I currently have installed on my Samsung plasma which for me is one of the best things since sliced bread. Not sure whether I will really need 4k, looks more like a sales gimmick than a necessity.
My preference would be to get a non smart tv and use my Chromecast as all I really want is Plex to watch my media. I visited my son last night and he has just got a Sony LED (approx £500) and it looked fantastic if I am honest which was much to my surprise.

If you want a 50"+ TV without all the bells and whistles the selection is not large but the prices are very good, Sony don't seem to do a basic TV without smart/3d on it above 40".but others do.

Samsung - http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd...samsung-ue50j5100-50-led-tv-10131976-pdt.html The 5000 range is the same as the 6000 range without the smart/3d.

I bought a 43" Samsung last week and I'm impressed with the picture quality on it, mine has Smart (wanted netflix and amazon) but no 3d (gimmick). Art first I thought I'd been given an empty box, I could pick the whole thing up with one finger!

Get last year's top of the range Sony. You don't need to use 3d or Smart TV.

Fully agree, last time I looked the best panels could only be had together with 3D and Smart features. I'm holding on to my plasma as to me there is no compromise on image quality. I'm still sad pioneer left the business.

Have to agree on Pioneer calling it a day as the Kuro was a great range which is sorely missed. Most annoying that you cannot just get a panel without bells and whistles but that's technological progress I guess so will have to swallow that pill.
I quite fancy one of the 55" Sony W8 series as many reports say it is much better than the newer W9 series. Looks like it will be a weekend of shop visits and internet trawling to get my goal lol.

A 43" Samsung would be a bit small as I have the space and set up for up to a 65" panel though 65" I feel would be too big so 55"-60" would be the preferred option in a move slightly up in size as opposed to down. Yes it's probably a bit pedantic but I think that I would probably regret going smaller than the 51" Samsung I already have. I really hate making those decisions that you know will irritate for month if not years :-)
