Had a quick look and play with this LCD TV the other day and after reading some reviews, myself and the misses are sorely tempted to go and treat ourselves for Xmas :)

What do ya reckon folks, should we do it?

If you have a room the size of a tennis court then hell yes, looks great.

If you live in a normal house with room sized rooms then I just don't get these huuuuuuuuge tele's. I've always thought it's better to spend the money on big sound if you want to add drama to stuff on the box.

Already have a good sound system mate and my current 32" Plasma is getting a bit long in the tooth now :)

Y not go for 50" Bry :naughty:

/looks at 21" non flat, non widescreen Toshiba crt sitting dusty in the corner, showing coronation street and thinks, it'll do a few more years yet! ;)

21"...

That's getting a bit carried away isn't it. Not sure I could cope with something that large clogging up the room. ;)

a very useful place if you are planning to spend big money:

In our normal house (1905 semi) we installed a wall mounted 50" plasma last year when the old crt went pop and its not too big for us even in a 12'x11' room (mounted on the 12' wall so we are sat at most 10' from it), but we don't receive tv, we only use it for dvd movies.

Our 1366x720 is fine at this distance, full 1080 screens are probably a bit better with 1080 hires content and displaying photos but you would have to sit a lot closer even on a 50" screen for 1080 to make a big difference, and with normal resolution DVDs this 720 was giving a better image than the 1080 screens we tried.

You've got to go and try looking at them, somewhere where they are setup reasonably well, preferably with inputs you'd expect to be using (eg dvd via hdmi or component). Most of the shops had really poor quality low res piped satellite tv, appallingly bad signal and you had to get them to give you the remote so you could get the colour settings off "vivid" and onto something proper.
We went out to get a highly rated 1080p 40" screen but when the dvds were tried on it there were strange line effects (they were inserting extra lines to make up the 1080 and it didnt work well enough)

High quality component video leads made a big difference, there was somebody recommended on the avforums, he makes them to order.

"DVD essentials" was a useful purchase (its a setup dvd) for setting up brightness contrast and colour etc

plasma is good for dvds but get LCD not plasma if you are planning to play games or use with a pc, the plasmas can get burnt if a high brightness area is on the screen in the same place for too long

if you are going to use the pc input check the screen's manual to see what resolutions it will support, it's not always the screen's full res.

hope that helps

I've had a 42" plasma for more than three years now, and love it. In our last place, the sitting room was quite small but the TV never looked out of place.

...to add: take your fav DVD with you from shop to shop, so you can check each TV with each other using the same images, and with the sort of program you'll be watching on it.

A neighbour of ours has a giant tv on the wall of his lounge. It's great when I'm working our front garden I can watch their tv!

I am going to do that, its just trying to think of the best DVD to take with me :)

Cheers for all the pointers guys, I will let you know how it goes tomorrow i.e. I will either have it in my possesion or not :D

Here's our 42" Screen, its Panasonic Plasma screen only not a TV we already have SKY+ box and projector so TV wasn't required. A 42" is a fine size, this room measures 2.5m by 5m, mind you if we hadn't gone for a projector too then it might have been a 50" screen. I think we sit about 3m from the Plasma and it's fine.

OMG Mike, so you have a 42" screen and when that's not BIIIIIIG enough you roll down an even bigger screen to project onto.

:eek::eek:

I think my problem with these big tele's is that I don't like television as a rule and I do like the cinema.

I am loving the conversion, well done. Projectors are ace, much better than a telly and the price is crazy compared. My room has a projector screen permanently attached to the wall, 90" across, and cost less than most 40" plasma of the time. 720p and 1020i again though, got into HD just at the wrong time :0)

Well its ordered it, due for delivery on the 15th January :D

We just treated ourselves to a 50" Samsung 1080P Plasma for Chrimbo... totally awesome!

Good choice, one of the best quality pictures I have ever seen on a plasma tbh.

but...

This is what you want

Samsungs new plasma :D:D:D

LOL. Well we've got a sizeable living room, but that would be pushing it a bit!

Nice :)

Any pictures?

All I need now is the PS3 and all will be good :D

Bry.

Just for you! :)

We watched 'Gladiator' on it last night and tbh it was like we'd never seen it before. The detail you see and the sense of space is tremendous.

Hi,

glad you liked our AV room, I only posted so it would give an idea of scale for a 42" screen, the PJ screen is 7 Feet :D

Only advice I can give is buy the biggest you can afford and the best you can afford becasue if you want to tradeup later you will lose a fortune, the Panasonic Plasma I have was over £2000 2 years ago, the new model is around £1000 ( mind you my one is still regarded as one of the best screen that Panasonic ever produced and are sought after s/h, so won't be getting rid of it anytime soon ;)) don't worry too much about 1080 and all that crap, unless you went right up the screen and had it side by side with a 720 you wouldn't know the difference, better to buy a superior 720 screen than a crappy 1080.

Mike.

Cheers for the info mikeyb :)

Like you stated about your screen costing £2000 2 years ago, my current Toshiba(32pd3000) was £2500 roughly 4 years ago and at the time was classed as one of the best Plasma screens out, still looks amazing even today and its not HiDef :)

After doing quite a bit of reading up on the 42X3030D we have decided that for the price its going for we just cant say no, so roll on 15th January :D
