Hi there

Apologies if this is vague but it's time I took the plunge and bought myself a tripod.

I have a Canon EOS 50D and would like a tripod that is reliable/strong/good quality but - ideally - also reasonably portable.

Thanks! :)

Paul

PS - I've seen the post about the cashback offer from Manfrotto. Thank you to the person posting that.

I've just got a Feisol carbon fibre tripod (after having but not using a metal Manfrotto for ages). I think a lot depends on how light and portable you want the tripod to be. I looked at Gitzos which are fantastic but too expensive, and other cheaper options like Benro. But the Feisol range looked best value to me (plus I got a good deal on a lightly used one). I keep reading that saving money on a tripod is a false economy as you end up buying a good one evntually. I'm not sure how true that is but I don't see any reason to move on from my Feisol (after using it for just a month, I admit).

Thanks for the responses so far.

I've been doing a bit of reading.

Any opinions on the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 (or Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 appears to be its successor)...?

I looked at the cxpro3 and the reviews say its not as sturdy as standard version so will probably go with the standard and half price head from warehouse express plus the £20 cash back ;)

The 4 is not the successor to the 3, Pro3 is a 3 section leg and the Pro4 is a 4 section leg, same tripod same height but the 4 sections make it shorter when closed making it more portable ....simples:)

You should not skimp on the head, mine cost more than the tripod itself.

I have a nice Gitzo in the for sale section here, add you own head and you have a super sturdy excelent tripod.

Ive never found Manfrottos particulary stable.

Hope you haven't tried the football and staircase test on yours Tom:D

Had been using Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 for ages but recently I switched to Giottos MTL8361B (Carbon Fibre) & Giottos GTMTL9361B (same tripod but aluminium) plus Giottos MH1300 ball heads. I changed all clamps to ArcaSwiss and am really happy with this set.
