New Toys

I am just days away from clicking the mouse on two manual pixapro versions of this strobe. I shall be looking at these power supplies as I want to use them in the studio as well as on location. I look forward to your comments.

Essential Photo don't have them yet. Hopefully they will be available soon.

Been doing some testing and they are slightly quicker at recharging the head unit, maybe 10% quicker - will be running them at a job next week so that will be the acid test.

Godox claims 2.5sec full-power recharge time for the battery pack (weight 606g) and "under two seconds" for the mains adapter (554g). Is that what you're getting Mike?

Does that unit have a built in fan Mike ?

I would say about that, although difficult to accurately test

Yes can be clearly seen through the cooling slots

What does AD-AC stand for? I thought it was some kind of disorder? Analog-Digital...? A rock band?

Godox light accessories (and lights) are all AD (initial code designation) and the AC stands for, wait for it, the ability to use AC (Alternating Current) as opposed to DC (Direct Current i.e. a battery)

I'm looking at these with interest, the only thing that puts me off is I shoot in small spaces, sometimes small living rooms or bedrooms, and I'm thinking 600Ws would be to much power even on the lowest setting, I use 200s at the moment, but I really like the versatility of these Godox 600s especially now with the mains power pack

At the risk of sounding very stupid, are these portable power packs for strobes?

If so, would they work on elinchroms? How much are they, how long do they last?

If not, please just ignore my stupidity :)

The godox at 1/256 will most likely be lower than your 200w head certainly lower than my smart flash heads. If you need less flash power you can also go into hss mode which will further reduce output as shutter increases.

No these are a dedicated AC PSU which you can use instead of the battery so no use for Elinchroms

full to 1/256 power can be quoted as either an 8 or 9 stop range (marketing men most definitely say 9 stops), most studio lights have a 5 stop range of adjustment so most likely this goes higher and lower than your 200W/S lights

Hmm, this is why I need to not come back to this forum. It has made me want to invest in one of these. I have an Elinchrom BRX 250 and am looking at adding another flash. Probably a silly question, but will there be a noticeable variation in colour temp using this? The ability to use these on locations as well as the studio is making me think these could be my all in one perfect solution. I am already eyeing a 360II for weddings, but using this could be the answer to everything. It would be incredibly handy.

I have to say I,ve not read or seen anything negative about Godox kit to date

The way I test recharge times:

1) Check that the flash is actually at 100% full charge when the beeper sounds.
2) Time ten immediately consecutive full power flashes, on the beeper. In this case, just using a clock/watch second hand will be accurate enough.
3) Don't forget to include the recharge time for the 10th flash.
4) Divide by ten :)

There may be a slight colour shift, particularly between full power and below say 1/16th power when the IGBT cuts in and chops off the yellower light from the tail of the pulse, but I doubt you'll notice it. It used to be that powerful IGBT controlled heads like the AD600 had a tendency towards blue, but the newer heads I've tested have been very good on this. In practise, the bigger colour change is between different brands/age of softbox.

What's the warranty from photomart Mike, as I was thinking of getting one from essential Pixapro as they give a 2 year warranty, I think they are a bit cheaper than photomart too

Actually Photomart is about £16 cheaper, not compared warranty on the AD600, woud have to phone and ask them.

Mike

Ok thought pixapro were cheaper, probably when they had their offer on, I did look on the photomart site but couldn't see any warranty info anywhere, although being UK based I'm guessing its at least 1 year, just a shame Lencarta can't rebadge them, that then would be almost perfect :)

Sounds spot on from the numbers on the back of the unit - it delivers 240 Watts (20Amps at 12Volts) and the capacitors in the light hold 600 Joules which will take 600/240 or 2.5 seconds. (one Watt = one Joule per Second).

Adapters from EBay and my first AD600 direct from China, 2nd from Photomart and that is where the third will come from, having a warranty is a benefit

Mike
Thanks for that. Sadly Photomart don't do the manual version of the light and, as I shoot with Pentax, there is no point wasting money on the TTL version. I know it may seem a bit odd, but I would much rather have Godox equipment with Godox written on it:confused:. I bought 3 RS600P off eBay, direct from China, and have had no problems, but this time I do want a UK warranty. So it looks like it's Pixapro or not at all for me:( I shouldn't complain as it's only a label and they offer two years warranty.

Checking the eBay/amazon prices I can't find any that are cheaper than Essential anyway, especially as I can claim the VAT back from a UK purchase. They show the AC adapter as 'out of stock' and, at £130, I may well risk eBay for those.

Lets just say that if I paid my offer price for 3 AC adapters it would not quite buy 2 from Essential, I have dealt with essential and find them to be good people.

Adorama, the USA stockist are pushing for more triggers so you might soon have TTL for Pentax

Mike

@HoppyUK retested and Battery 10 flashes 30 seconds, Mains 10 flashes 24.5 seconds

Mike

Thanks Mike. 3.0 secs for battery and 2.5 secs for mains is a bit below claimed times, and most mains-only studio heads of similar power are typically about one second faster.

If you get a mo, I'd be interested to know what the times are at half power - assuming that's an accurate 300Ws, which I expect it is. 300Ws is still a very usable amount of power, and if it knocks those times in half that'd be sweet :)

About 12 seconds for 10 on mains and about 13 seconds on battery.

I had noticed that. As a Pentax shooter I'm used to living in forlorn hope that someday someone will cater for us:(:(. In this instance, though, I'm not prepared to spend the extra £170 per unit for a feature that I will hardly ever use or have a need for (I have P-TTL flashes and have only ever used them once) just on the off chance that Godox get around to TTL for Pentax when no one else has bothered up till now. I might be tempted to chance it on one of the AD600s as it might be useful at weddings, although I tend to use speedlights and have managed up to now.

If we decide to sell them then we will sell them as Godox products, because that's what they are - we won't be changing them in any way.
It's really all about the security of the serial number, because we have trade outlets and therefore don't necessrily have a record of the actual purchaser, so we need to be sure that we have supplied the products that come back for warranty repairs. This can be a real problem where the manufacturers have no repair/customer service infrastructure and sell to anyone.
