Picked up a 40D this morning, not had a chance to do much with it but first impression is that's a lovely bit of kit. Shot a few test frames and it doesn't seem to have the focus problems that Pete experienced and the image quality is impressive. Had a quick play with live view - not sure I'd ever use it outside of macro shots but for that it would be a massive boost.

So far a big  for the 40D, I'll get to try it in anger on Sunday with a race, be interesting to see how the improved AF performs and Monday I'm shooting fireworks at a posh manor house - I might even used a tripod :D

Cheers. Race is the Ilminster 10k, my foolish wife is running.

I do a bit of running too. Normally after the other half finds out how much the new lens cost.......

Congrats on your buy hope you have fun with it and good luck to your wife
Bob

Congrats on joining this unexclusive club.
I've had mine for over a month now and havnt found anything to really grumble about with it. Its streets infront of my 20D, but I do note that there is slightly less room on the grip area and that there are *lots* more ways of getting it wrong.

Congratulations on the purchase pxl8

Congrats on this purchase - I must admit I'm struggling to work out if I can justify an upgrade from the 30d - a good part of me is thinking it's better to hold out another year and do some serious saving towards a 1 series but I'd be interested in any comments which might say otherwise?

Have a read of this thread.

A comparison between the 40D and the 1DMk3 would produce a similar result.

For long lenses and filling the frame, the 40D is without challenge. Ir will even out-perform the new 1DS MK3 with it's 21 million pixels when it comes to cropping and retaining image size, although I don't think the 1DSMK3 will be far behind it, but it's £6K!

It depends how badly you need a 1 Series body, and what subjects you mainly shoot obviously, but you might do better spending the money on glass instead?

I have noticed a significant difference between the 30 and 40 in two key areas already - image quality and focusing ability. The 40D really doesn't benefit from the changes to the AF sensors, esp. in low light where it hunts a lot less than the 30D. AI servo is a lot better at tracking as well, it seems a lot more fluid as when I pan across a scene it seems like the focus is always spot on and I never see it "kick" as I move from a near to far object.

Worth holding out for a 1 series? Dunno, if you're happy with the 30D then why not keep saving and look at your options again when you feel you need more than the 30D can offer...

In other words - do you need to upgrade or just want to?

congrats on 40D had mine a few weeks now...nice camera,only prob i have had..sometimes i get err99,dunno why:shrug:,maybe it will go away..if not,back it goes:nono:..hope you have no probs..enjoy:banana:

From what I've read about the 40D it does have some improvements over the 30D that I woulod clearly benefit from. the increased frame rate is the most notable - the majority of people probably don't need 6.5fps but when shooting speedway it woulod make a difference to me for sure. It's interesting you mention the improvements in the AF in low light and also the servo mode too - as both of these things might well tip me towards considering an upgrade. :bang:

However.....one of the things I've found increasingly frustrating whilst using the 30D through this year is the 1.6x crop meaning that, particularly when working at Ipswich, my field of view is not quite what I need. Much as I love my 70-200mm lens, there have been SO many occasions this year when I've wanted another 15mm at the short end as I just can't quite get the shots I need! That's the main reason for me wanting to consider the 1 series, and I'm still thinking that a second hand 1Dmk2n might be the way to go.

Nope - neither of those - I'd miss the f2.8 too much.

See - I said I was a picky madam didn't I?!! :D

I'd go with the Sigma 50-150, you can always crop a bit for the times it's a little short at the long end.
