I've been considering investing in a good modern sound system for a while, but at the last minute I decided I wanted some of the magic I remember from the 80s and 90s. So I went down to a brilliant little vintage audio shop in Crouch End this morning and spent some time choosing a turntable and amp. A decent set of speakers will come in a few weeks, but in the meantime this is just blowing me away:

Akai turntable and Denon amplifier - the sound quality even through my cheapo speakers is really good. I've bought 4 LPs for now:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Carole King - Tapestry
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (playing now)
Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic

So, who's still playing records? :love:
 
I've got some seriously old LP's (the youngest ones are the Beatles) which I keep meannig to put up on fleabay, no room for a record deck and the LP's I have definately aren't my sort of music....

Nice Denon, I had an old Denon amp in the 90s and it was awesome with my Akai components.....good choice

Ryan why not stick them up here first I am looking for the original War of The Worlds album
 
I so miss the sound of the crackly vinyl..... I can't bear to part with my LP's, even though I have nothing to play them on :lol:

WOTW is way to new for what I have lol, it was handed down through from my Grandfather...

I'm pretty sure he had to wind his first one up :D

The guy at the shop was brilliant, very knowledgeable and they had a huge range of amps, speaker and turntables, most of which was classic vintage stuff. Highly recommend checking out Audio Gold.

By the way, I saw WOTW at a record shop up the road from me - Alan's Record and CD Shop
 
only a short walk away from spikes to stand the equipment on and mains conditioners...dont forget the acoustic treatment!
 
I still have my vinyl collection (about 100 LP's) in the loft and could never part with it, although I doubt I will ever play it again, as most of it has been replaced on CD or MP3. My best vinyl is every 12" single and every album Marillion released in the Fish era in limited edition picture disk. Not one of them has ever been played :love:

The one thing I really miss with those old LP's is the beautiful sleeve, specially the gatefold ones. Some bands had sleeves with the most amazing artwork :)

Mike - I grew up in Crouch End.....:thumbs:... many, many years ago

still got lots of LPs - Carol King, Joni Mitchell etc

with a B&O system from the 1980s - magnificent sound - not used much now !
 
does old vinyl go for much on ebay? my dads got shedloads holding up the walls (most of it classical and jazz but theres a bit of prog, rock blues etc in there as well) does it have any sort of value because he doesn;t play it and id fathom that most of it is repeated in his CD collection

I have the album and twin tape, but you'll have to keep looking I'm afraid, my record collection isn't for sale.:nono::)

I converted a double wardrobe to take my record collection. I used to go into a Downtown Records in Romford and spend about £30-£50 a week on lp's, as well as 7" & 12" singles and I used to buy the odd few cd singles too even though I didn't have a cd player at the time to play them on, that had to be over 20 years ago. Probably nearer 25 yrs ago.

I've already got a huge CD collection, but there's loads of music I would love on vinyl, so I see myself easily spending £30 a week on albums at my local shop. I've seen a few cool records there that I want :help:

There's just something very intimate about taking the time to listen to a record. MP3's have their place, but the point and click music world just seems so cheap when compared with vinyl.
 
I used to collect records - I had every no.1 single(plus a load of others) going back to day 1 up in the loft at my parent's house. Then they had a house fire and I ended up with one large lump of back vinyl -with a couple of coloured spots where the likes of my first edition Police singles were :bang: :lol:
 
I've still got my big Lenco Goldring turntable fitted on a 12lb platter wired into my separates.

Keep meaning to dig out the vinyl as there's something nice about mulling over the record cover whilst listening to the music.
 
I've got my vinyl boxed away, also probably never to be played again, including an original 1963 pressing of With the Beatles (although I can't vouch for its condition). I've always been tempted to go out and get a record deck but I really couldn't justify the expense of the additional hardware required to do them justice.

They're made to order, more like, bloody hell we sold one, quick build it

The difference in price between the 1m and the 2m cable is approx £2,800, you'd just move the stereo wouldn't you :lol:
 
Amongst loads including more recently, Kate Bush 1st album picture disc, Half speed masterd discs from Dire Straits, my oldest an original Glenn Miller.
 
I still regularly enjoy the warm sound of vinyl, on a Linn LP12/Basic Plus/K9/and a Project Phono Box SE T/table pre amp.

Pete, I also have the original WOTW on vinyl:D plus a few hundred others I snapped up when everyone was ditching their vinyl for CD's.

My best finds were from a s/h record and bookshop that managed to stock up with vinyl from a bankrupt record shop, all mint and unplayed:)
 
the problem with cables and the perceived quality of different ones is that our auditory memory if very short, only an instant 'on/off' change can be properly gauged by our hearing, thats why these audessey systems are so popular, they clean up the sound instantly, but still, IMPO, are not as good as a properly tuned room
 
I still wack on my vinyl on my Linn Basic with akito arm. No complaints from the neighbors when I crank it up a bit every now and again. Mind you saying that, I would not be able to hear if they were banging on the walls ;)

Although I love the nostalgia of it all, My record collection and CD collection are now just taking up time. I have all the music I want on MP3.

Very difficult to drop something I have collected since 12 years old. Maybe but maybe its time to move on.
Even my separates units have not seen light of day for a few years and my base box is now a coffee table.

Oh god no, how can I be saying this.

You never know I might even upgrade from by box brownie.:cuckoo:

My HiFi was demoted to the garage when I bought a B&O Zeppelin, I sold the home cinema setup in favour of a Yamaha YSP-800 all in one, both do the job very well without all the cables and speakers everywhere

CDs sound much better than MP3s - just remember that if you ever decide to sell your collection. Records of course are prone to hissing and popping, but if you can get use to this, they too are of better sound quality than MP3s.

MP3s are the spawn of the devil. It's like RAW vs a JPG that's been compressed to 'quality-medium' in photoshop... :shake:
