new to wildlife shots

OMIG RATS! I sincerely hope not! That idea freaks me out. Seriously, I don't think so, but of course its hard to tell. There are the blinkin foxes, may be they eat the rats?

I'll post some pics of the garden shortly.

They do, but here - in the country - they seem to prefer rabbits which are probably easier to catch. I'd guess that urban ones scavenge for most of their food.

Rats get a bad press, and they can be a problem, but they're interesting little animals too. My wife likes watching them, and used to feed them in the garden, until I talked her out of it for their own good - the neighbour was about to call an exterminator and I didn't want to see them killed.

You can just see the various bird feeders if you look closely. The seed is one of those 'general' bird food mixes with some sunflower seeds.

There is a hanging one on a pole by the tree at the bottom of the garden

The wisteria is white, smells amazing. Grows ridiculously. Drawback is you have to sweep up the blossom covers, then the blossom, then the leaves so its an all year job!

Ok Carol the first thing is to tell us which direction the sun comes and goes in using the bottom picture for reference. This will determine the best place to set the feeders up and where will be best for you to set the camera up. regards to the bird seed I would advise just using Sunflower hearts or the ones still in their shells. Most birds favour Sunflower seeds and will just root around in the feeder and spill most of it. If you want to use the wild mix then fine but I would use just a small quantity in a seperate feed tray with edges on it to prevent too much spillage.

Hi the sun rises over the garage at the back of the picture, sun on the kitchen window/patio most of the day (hence the pergola to give us some shade!). It moves round to the right of the shot during the day.
I'll look for some sunflower hearts when I'm next down the shops.

Edit: noticed this morning before 9am there was a blue bird back at the seed, seemed to loiter underneath the wisteria in the dark shade before making for the seed feeder. Also saw some little dark brown birds (sparrows?) which I haven't seen before jumping around on the patio floor then flying back under the wisteria. I think my fantasies about taking pics of the little blighters may be staying as a dream, since the light is too low and too much shadow, but I'll keep hopeful, and at least they birdies are getting some nutrition.

Oh, and a shot of the wisteria in flower.
