hello forum,
my name is glynis
i live in rochdale lancashire

i have come to this site for help in trying to find a new camera??
at present i have a digital finepix 9.00mega (finepix f47) with soom zoom on it.
i want to find another camera upgrade if you like.
i am looking at the SRL camera's but don't want to go over the top with price as some are over 500.00 and that is a lot to pay for what i want.
in fact it was a sales person at comet who told me about the site.
if anyone can help me on my way to finding a good camera i would be greatful
i await any reply's please

Hi Glynis and welcome - great name - one of my ex-colleague's shared the same name as you... Not very common :)

Good of Comet to recommend the internet for people to go buy their goods elsewhere :)

What would you like to use your new chosen camera for? What kind of photographs do you like to take? And how much do you see your interest in photography growing - would you like to become more and more adventurous as time goes by?

i presume that is your name and possibly your of welsh origin?
i like my rock and roll and when we go to gig's my trusty camera goes with me.
there is a rock and roll magazine called"Maggie's Blue Suede News" this comes out every month and lets everybody know what is going on from scotland down to london and beyond.
i send reports in with pictures that some times gets published.
but our rock and roll club has it's own web page and my photo's get put on there as well.(halifax rock and roll lcub)
what i am looking for is a camera that will take shots in subdued lighting and catch them when they are dancing on the floor to the music.
so i guess movement is one of my priority's plus a bigger zoom than the one i have.i do take my camera on holiday as well.
i would like start being a bit adventurous but not too much as i do have a bit of a problem understanding a lot of complication.
i was looking into panosonic lumix fz38 after seeing the lumix g1 on the t.v.
but at 500.00 plus if you don't get your head around it you have lost a lot of money haven't you.
also a samsung wb5000 or a pentax x70 these i have seen on the comet web site, ubt i am not sure as i have only seen the pentax today.that is why i am on this site as the shop asst could not tell me what i wanted to know.
sorry to be a bit long winded.
i await your reply if you can help.

That's me :)

So you're looking for something that does well in low light with a longish zoom..

Based on that - it might be worth considering good quality second hand - then if it doesn't work out for you, you can sell it for about the same price you bought it for - so you won't lose out too much...

I'd also say for low light shooting in a rock and roll gig - an external flash would be 100 times better than using anything built in...

So might consider something like:

A Canon EOS 350d/400d body (Sold in classifieds here recently for between £200-250)
A Canon 430EX flash (about £125-150 second hand)
A Canon 55-250mm Image Stabilised lens (£200 new - less secondhand) - a longer focal length for zooming into stage acts a little easier....

If you take your time looking for each of the bits - you should get the full kit for about £500 - and could then sell it again for the same if you didn't get on with it... There is obviously a higher risk with second hand as you have no guarantees - but there are some good pieces of kit out there for low amounts of money.

This would then give you a camera that has full auto mode - plus all the manual modes so that as you get better - you can have more control...

That'd be my suggestion - not sure what others would go for :)

Hi Glynis, and :welcome: to TP.

thanks for the advice
i will try and get some papers and start looking for what you say, plus i might go and find a new one just to have a look at.
might even try loot there might be some in there.:)
with you giving me the make and model it makes looking better.
but like i say if the instructions are difficult i will get frustrated and give up.
my social life is a bit hectic to say the least and having to work going to the funny place that pays you money(work) life is hard trying to have fun going rock and rolling.
i must leave now going to sale in manchester to see "Linda Gail Lewis" jerry lee's cousin.
take care

I've used a 400 - but not a 350d - however I do believe the 350d was quite a dependable solid camera. It's not a current model - so you won't find it in any shops you'll only find it in the places you've looked, or on the classifieds here.

Of the two kits you've listed - I think the first lens is a bit short for what you say you want to take photographs of, and has no flash - however if cheap enough you could go for it - then pick up another second hand zoom lens and second hand flash...

Of the second kit - that's a little better as it has a longer lens - with the tamron 28-300 - however I don't think it is image stabilised - so handheld at lower speeds/light wouldn't produce as good a result. The Centon flash won't be quite as good as the Canon. For the flash - I'd either try and stick with the Canon, or possibly a Metz brand - others don't really cut the mustard with a beginner in DSLR photography :)

I guess these two kits - whether they are good value or not - will depend on the price being asked for them.

welcome to the forum :)
