Hello Everyone,

Im pretty new to photography and struggle sometimes with inspiration on subjects/projects. I've dabbled with a few techniques but yet to find my niche.

I have a Canon SLR 450D with standard kit lens. I like the editing side of photography which can turn the most average shot into something else.

I mainly take photos in RAW but having spoken to a number of photographer's who suggest the norm seems to be JPEG for ease. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Welcome to the forum (although I am so new here I dont really feel qualified to say that!)

Shoot RAW if you value quality, shoot jpeg if you value speed. If you actually like editing then you should definitely shoot RAW! Even if you didnt I would still say shoot RAW, it allows so much more flexibility in edit that you can recover exposure and whitebalance problems with ease as well as making significant contrast changes as required. Shooting jpeg may be the norm, but it isnt the best way to shoot 99% of the time.

On the subject of processing turning 'the most average shot into something else" isn't a path I would personally recommend. You might look back on your work in a few years time and wonder why you took that approach. But, if its where you want to take your photography then good luck :)

however .. - if I'm out for a 'walk' i shoot jpeg Fine - dont want too much time spent on PC

a specific subject or project i shoot RAW
