New to Photography need help to choose camera

Hi, I have just joined this forum after someone gave me the link and advised me to join to ask about the best bridge camera for me to buy. I love photography and will be starting a course soon. I want to buy a bridge camera that will be good at taking all round family pictures but also pictures of my marine fish. I have a budget of between £150 and £250 and have been looking at the Fuji FinePix s8400w and similar. I have been told this might not be the best camera for the price and I would really appreciate any advice on what camera would be the best one for me to get. Sorry I am a complete novice so don't really no what all the terms etc mean. My current camera is a Nikons 3100 but I really would like a bridge camera.

If you have a D3100 why do you want a bridge camera?
 
it is a compact camera s3100 not d3100 doesnt have lens and doesnt take great photos it is the one robbie williams advertised on TV and cost me £70 new. I mean they are ok but not great. I have always wanted a bridge camera my Dad bought one a few years ago and I can take gret pics with it but it is a bit outdated now. I think a dslr would be way to complicated for me at the moment and I wouldnt be able to afford more lens. Once i buy the camera i need that to be it expense wise. I just want an idea of a good bridge camera in my price range, I will never be an expert just want to be able to take good pictures with a half decent camera, I know alot of that comes from knowing what you are doing with the camera which is why I am joining a course, my partner is going to buy me the camera so I need to take advantage before he changes his mind lol. Thanks guys
 
I have to say for that, a Panasonic G3 with 14-42 kit lens is a pretty good bet. Moves you to a largish sensor with good image quality, allows you to improve on lens/body as and when and is still small enough to not be a burden. They are a couple of years old now but still great cameras (Ms arad85 uses my old one). On sale now at Argos for £280 - you should be able to pick up a used set for significantly less.
 
Depends on budget.
Pentax X5 seems pretty good for an entry level bridge camera. £140 - £170 if you google it.
Next price up you would be as well buying a DSLR like the Nikon D3200 for about £320 with 18-55 lens. Canon do similar.
DSLRs are no more difficult to use than bridge cameras.

Sorry my bad just saw it as "D"3100 :cuckoo:

You could buy one for around £250 if you look around though, mine cost that as a kit with money off at Asda.

you may need a macro lens or extension tubes to get some good closeups of the marine fish
also the lighting mybe quite low and so you would need a lens with a wide aperture or a camera that handled high iso setting

been having a look at the Pentax x5 and looks good thanks
 
does anyone know if the fujifilm s6800 is a good camera for what I need? it is around £150.
 
also been looking at the fuji filmpix s4800 but not sure which is best out of the 2 as they seem quite similar.
 
:)Thanks Kendo1 thats really helpful. I see the Pentax x5 is on the list of best bridge cameras, definatly want to have a closer look into that camera
