Hi everyone :)

Firstly, I'm new to TP so I hope I have posted in the right bit!

I've decided to take up photography as a hobby and just need a few thoughts for what would be a good first DSLR. I have done some research and decided on a budget of around £350.

Any help and ideas would be great as my birthday was a few days ago so now I have enough money to go shop!

Aimee :)

Around that sort of budget you should be able to find a decent s/h Canon 450D with a basic 18-55 kit lens, I suggest you have a browse of Ebay to give yourself some ideas. Whilst many disparage the kit lens they can produce some good shots.

This was on my old 350D with a kit lens.

Hi Aimee and welcome

I'd agree with Ken about the 450D. It's a cracking camera and should fall nicely into budget, allowing for spare battery, memory cards, maybe monopod etc etc.

I've still got my 300D and get great results with it

Thank you both! I had looked into the 450D so I think I will go and try it out in a shop and then look online too.

Thanks for your advice :)

I have had a look on ebay and found a 450D but it comes with a 28-80mm lens. It seems a really good deal as it comes with lots of other extras.
Would you recommend going for this one or sticking with the 18-55 lens?

Ta! :)

The 28-80mm lens is an old lens and not very good optically. It is also a bit wide for the cropped sensor on the 450D.

Hi Aimee and welcome. I can vouch for an 18-55 IS lens as I've now had 2 of them. I got 1 and sold it when I got a superzoom but soon realised I'd made a mistake and bought another one. I've never used the 28-80 but after looking on ebay you can pick them up for around £40 while the 18-55 IS is around double that so it might be better if you get an 18-55 IS with your camera. It's a very good lens for a kit, gives pretty good IQ and the IS is really useful to.

Ohh okay, thanks for the advice :)
It sounds good to me so I'll have another look on ebay.

Thanks again!

Depends on how much it's going for really, but if the choice is there for the 18-55IS lens I'd opt for that.

Another good lens to look at is the 55-250IS for the future

I have the 450d and 18-55 kit lens, I rate it, it might not be the best but beginners like us, cant fault it.

Hi all,
Just got my dad to bid on a 450D and we won it so I now have that on the way :) thank you for all your advice!
Just another quick question... which memory card does everyone think will be best? I'm not wanting one that has a extremely high capacity but just one that will take a couple of hundred photos. I have no idea about how much the cards hold in these cameras so all help will be appreciated :)

Thanks!

I've got some Duracell 16Gb SDHC cards from www.7dayshop.com and they hold around 3,000 Jpegs on each, but if you shoot RAW you'll soon fill that up. Maybe get a couple of 8Gb if you're going to be shooting Jpeg or 16Gb if you're shooting RAW or a mixture of both. Also get the Class 10 cards if you can as you'll get more burst shots as the buffer will clear faster. Something like this http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=111092 will be ideal though.

The 450D is a great camera and you will be able to experiment, learn and grow with it.

Welcome to TP

As others have said, the 450D will do you proud for a while. I've been using a 400D for a while now, and am only upgrading due to wanting to try and get more serious about it. It dawned on me a couple of days ago that I've managed with the body, the kit 18-55, a cheap Tamron 55-200 and a 50mm f1.8 for about 5 years!

Hi All, Aimée's dad here. Just wanted to add my thanks to all those who took the time to respond.

Aimée came home to collect the camera yesterday and the house is filled with the sound of the clicking EOS shutter and lit up by the blinking flash. Nothing is safe from the budding new paparazzi...

I'm sure you will enjoy the 450D  I know that I do and it can get some brilliant results  It's very capable as a camera I've had mine for nearly 3 years now :D

Welcome to TP
