PP is something i have done very little of in my short time of owning my dslr.

I have uploaded a picture to flickr as a part of the digital slr skills bootcamp course.
As someone has pointed out the background is not white enough, i have a full copy of lightroom 3 can any help with this .

Thanks

The background isn't really getting enough light on it to make it white. I don't think that Lightroom really has all the tools to produce a good clean white background easily.

First thing I would do is probably use the exposure and brightness sliders to make the background whiter. This is also going to brighten the subject matter, which whilst being able to take some brightness it may over do it. Next I'd see what effect using the Lights slider in the tone curve will do.

It's highly probable that al this tweaking will result in the subject being too light. Now use the targeted adjustment brush to reduce the brightness on the subject matter. Make sure you've auto masking turned on . This will help keep the tools adjustments on the subject.

I think it would have been easier to use Photoshop and some quick masking would be a quicker and better job, however as you only have Lightroom see how these suggestions work

Is this what you are after?

In Lightroom 3 I simply used the "White Balance Selector" and clicked on the grey part of the background, then increased the "Highlights" and "Lights" to brighten the background and decrease the "Darks" to bring the object back to its original shade. You could probable increase the "Highlights" and "Lights" a bit more if necessary.

I wonder why when people buy expensive, wonderful, state of the art software they don't take time to learn how to use it !

Well, I didn't like to say that. We all have to start somewhere and reading the book is not always the most attractive part!!!!

Some of us don't have the luxury of time , i apologise i don't know everything about lightroom 3 as iv'e only had it a week .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somelier thank you that is perfect , nice to know some people are not so quick to judge .

There are mo shortcuts to learning properly!! Why should others do the work for you if you won't help yourself? After you've had it a year do come back and ask more!

Seems pretty harsh, the OP just asked if correcting it was possible and if so how

Isnt asking for advice and tips a good way to learn, or do all us newbies have to hide in the dark with a very dull manual and trial and error until we are fit to emerge onto the stage with our Jedi like PP skills ?

The problem with forums like this is that some people expect others to do the legwork - and they just come along and get answers. Sorry I don't help lazy people that don't do any work for themselves.

So - you want to use my time to learn Lightroom and you just get answers to the questions you can't be bothered working out?

So why bother posting in the thread then? Just leave such threads to people more willing to be friendly and helpful.

because people like the OP who expect everything on a plate - and don't want to learn - just pizz me off. I'm very happy to help peple who also want to help themselves.

I imagine he was just after some pointers about a good way of solving his problem himself with a fairly complex piece of software that seems to offer lots of ways of trying to achieve the same thing

A forum is a community and one of the main reasons for being involved in one is to share experiences and learn from each other surely ?

I dont recall having to pass a test before having to join the forum, it says beginners welcome . I feel for the OP as i have only had LR3 a couple of weeks too

He wasn't asking for YOUR time specifically, and no one was obliging you to offer it. If it annoys you so much, as said previously, just move on to another thread.

I much prefer peple to people - don't you?

Look before this thread gets out of hand , awp i'm a member of other forums and have been for many years .
May be i didn't put enought in my first post, i had been trying to pp the picture myself in LR3 before posting on here but i kept covering the shadows , all i wanted was a few pointers Somelier was kind enough to pp it for me with a guide which was a great help.

I understand that as your a long time member on here you have been asked some stupid (to you ) questions on repeatedly occassions.
I an certainly not lazy and was looking for a few pointer , thats why i thought you reaction was a bit harsh but we all have an opinion.

Water under the bridge now

Thanks

Rich

I think that's a bit unfair. If the OP was short of time to get the image sorted, then he's come to the right place for some help. I'm sure he'll learn from this discussion and realise he can't expect to have his every problem solved and will in fact try to learn more. I'm sure I've had boosts from other photographers in the past. I used to lead photographic courses (before digital was even a dream) and was amazed at the lack of knowledge of some of the attendees on the courses - they hadn't even bothered to read the instruction manual for their camera, but as I taught more people, I realised that they were intimidated by the technology. Once they were given a pointer in the right direction, they were happy work things out for themselves.

So come on, let's give him a chance and be charitable.
