New to forum and new to digital!

Hello,

I have just bought my first digital SLR - Nikon 5100D and am so excited about using it! Having just used film Pentax SLR about 10 years back, it's a huge leap forward for me and am just getting to grips with what this camera can do!

Any hints, tips for a beginner such as myself?

Also I have a whole day off today to start messing around with my lovely new camera. What would you do? Would like to go out and explore some good places to shoot but the lovely British overcast grey weather makes it hard to think of somewhere good to start! Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to TP!

Just get out there and start shooting, make those boring scenes you would otherwise just pass in day to day life feel new and exciting!

It is hard to give you any other real suggestions as you haven't mentioned where you are from

Wow that's awesome. I just bought my first! SLR today as well. Canon T3i. It was hard not to go with that Nikon you bought. Great camera. Canon just clicked for me for some reason. I am totally new to this so I thought I would start out with a class this weekend. If I can't do that I think I might go to the zoo and frighten the animals for a bit. Lol. What ever I end up doing I know its going to be fun. I'm very excited. Enjoy...

Hi Beckerecker, try the tutorial section, I've picked up a few good tips from there. Don't know how much you know, but may be worth a look.
