Hi everyone, i am new to here and film, would like to get some advise from you all. thanks in advance!!

i am always interested in film shooting but for limited knowledge about it, i went for digital instead as i can practice as much as i like in a cost effective way. now i got some idea how to shoot properly(still no good in it:'() so would like to give film a try.

i have a canon 500d and 2 lenses only. may you guys advise which camera i should start with? i looked on ebay and to be honest, it confused me as too many to choose, af/mf.

any other suggestions for starting film are welcomed as well!!!

thanks

Welcome to the wonderful world of film.

As you are already a Canon shooter I would suspect that a cheap Canon film body would be the way to go but I don't really know the Canon system at all but I'm sure somebody will be along in a minute with all your options.

Depends on what you want? An AF camera that mimics the 500d but shoots film or a mf camera with manual modes for the authentic(!) experience? There are great ways to get into film, for example an Olympus OM camera and lens, pentax, older nikons- you name it its available!

Budget, prefer AF or MF, want an all mechanical body (that is battery independent), or an aperture priority/shutter priority electronic body?

Whether you are recommended a film eos body also depends on your current canon lenses. If they are both efs then there's no point pointing you are the eos range as they won't be useable

I would recommend getting one of the inexpensive manual focus SLRs from olympus, pentax etc for a few quid and just seeing if you can get on with the process of film. If you can then they are a gateway to wherever your photographic brain wants to go, if not you've only lost a few quid

In fact, having seen where you are, if you're ever over Notts way I'm sure I've got something I could lend you to see if you like the process. It's unlikely to be very flash, but it'll give you an idea what film is like

thanks for all quick and helpful response!!!

i don't mind either AF/MF. is there any different between mechanical and non-mechanical body, except for battery purpose?

i have found olympus om10 and Pentax ME Super, may you also advise what types of lenses i should look for?

re raathistle: where can i get them for a few quids? i just only found them in ebay.

sorry for all stupid questions and insufficient information given. thanks anyway

How about a medium format folding camera?

As manual as it gets.. almost as far from a DSLR as it gets (you'll never be mistaken for a regular digital shooter).. film still readily available to buy and can be developed on the High Street.. huge negatives.. and cheaper than chips.

thanks for your advise. at the moment i just want to try 35mm first, then will go for the medium format.

am still looking for the right camera, hope it won't take too long as i can't wait to start:)

Welcome to film - have you handled any film cameras that you like? There is a vast, vast variety of film cameras out there and they all have their quirks, choosing what to got for is a minefield!

Fortuantely most of them are now cheap as chips so buy one, try it and flog it again!

Hi Alan, i have found olympus om10 and Pentax ME Super, may you also advise what types of lenses i should look for?

Or you recommend others? thanks

I would start with the usual 'kit' lens on these cameras, a 50mm prime. They are usually f1.8 or f2.

In the case of those 2 you can't beat the oiginal lenses: That's Zuiko stuff for the Olympus and SMC Pentax M for the ME. Very similar in terms of lenses from both manufacturers, The pentax ones are sharper but the Zuikos offer better flare and chromatic abberation resistance, at least in my experience with comparable lenses. It certainly pays to have good glass.A 50mm f1.4 for each should be around £50-£60 and will be a very nice thing to use.

You should be able to get a SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/2 for £15-20 if you shop cannily, the f/1.7 has a reputation for better performance but unless you have nothing better to do than test lenses, who cares? It's a lot of glass for very little money.

Not at all, daft questions are our specialty!

i have just got a fantastic deal of pentax ME super from ebay with the following:

- standard lens SMC Pentax-M 1:1.7/50mm
- SIGMA Zoom-Master 1:2.8-4/35-70mm
- Super Paragon wide angle lens 1:2.8/28mm
- Miranda 330CB flash gun
-shoulder strap and lower part of ERC
- elns shades and lens caps
- various square filters
- 2 cable releases
- Instruction booklet
- form fitted hold all case

so now i just need to get some films and ready to go!!! finger crossed with my film taking experience!!

thanks all here

That ME Super you bought looks to be in good condition, and you paid a very good price considering what you got. Some people pay near that price for the 50mm f/1.7 alone!

There's a lot of Pentax love going round at the minute isn't there! I almost feel like withdrawing my LX from ebay!

Had a peek on "Completed Listings" on eBay, that's all :) I already have a Pentax MX and I'm trying to keep gear acquisition to a minimum so I wasn't one of the bidders, there were a few of you though!

haha........knew it was a good deal and didnt want to miss it, so kept increasing the max bid price...silly me

now you found me there, feel no privacy anymore, haha....
