We have a new studio and no lights! In fact we only have camera and lenses really! I am after some advice really - which lights should I buy - for general portrait photography. I have seen some 'lighting packs' advertised, but wanted some mopre independant advice! Anybody recommend some good sites to buy from...we will have quite a big list!
Thank you in advance for your time....

Budget? Studio size? Simple one light and reflector OR full on setup with key, fill, hair, BG etc etc?

You need to be a bit more specific

you'd do well to look at the Lencarta range

I had a sneaky suspicion that I would need to be more specific. Studio is pretty big and one end will have an office desk in it. Will get the measurements of the studio tomorrow...and be back! I think we need a full set up - as for budget, tbh I have little idea as only started researching this today. That is our aim if possible anyway! Obviously I want good value, but also must be of a reasonable quality.
Thanks for your help!

Hard to say much with so little info, but I'm pretty sure you'll be needing some decent quality gear. The brands to look at are Bowens, Elinchrom, and Lencarta.

Basic two-heads kits start around £300-400 but you'll quite likely need to spend more, plus a background system and flash meter.

I started with 600ws Interfit Stellars in a small home studio (2 softbox kit) then we bought a tripple pack of Bowen Espirt's 500ws. Still have all the same gear for the last few years, just our cameras have changed. Started with a Canon 350D, now have 5d mk II and Hasselblad HD3 mk II in a 2000 sq feet studio. So start small and just add to it is my advice. if your new to the game, too many flash heads will cause you trouble. Simple setups then move to more complex later.

Thank you for the advice. Now in a position to start buying...exciting! Studio ready....10 foot vinyl arrived......now some decisions to make! Really tricky when you've never used lights particularly before and working on a pretty low budget! However....after a bit more research, I shall be using my flexible friend....any last minute advice???

I use the Lencarta's. Really happy with them.
