I am in the process of replacing a faulty hard drive on my Sony viao , I want to replace it with a ssd , the direct replacement looks easy enough to do myself , I have sourced the drivers for the laptop after a lot of searching and I now have these on a USB stick, I had a retail version of win7 installed and the I took the free win10 download, so as it stands I am not sure what’s the best way of getting win 10 back on a clean new ssd drive , could anyone help on the best way of doing this thanks

Download it via another PC, copy it to CD or USB stick as required and install it on your laptop. It should pick up the registration details when it 'phones home'.

Of course, the IT person in me says 'just restore it from your backup'....

I thought only my windows 7 was valid , so basically download win10 from Microsoft and then run it via a USB on the new drive

Not an expert but fo you not just clone the drive- i did something similar on a desktop a few years ago and im sure it was a straightforward clone with some software

Be interested to see how you get on and if you find it speeds up your Viao - wife has one and it's painfully slow at times...

I gave up in the end but eventualy found the drivers on sonys website under a different model and saved them on my works Pc in case i decide to try again..

I'm guessing he doesn't have one.
Do you have the window 7 DVD?

The link Retune posted is very informative.
You can download the windows ISO image and burn it to dvd, you can aldo and create a bootable usb stick but you laptop might be too old.
Either way you need access via another pc.

Not a direct comparison at all but I was recently recommended to upgrade my ailing Apple PowerBook's hard drive to an SSD one.

Unbelievable difference and my still very full hard drive is faster now than it was brand new out of the box 6 years ago. VERY highly recommended.
