New Sigma Lens, How Do You Check Them??

Hi. I've just got my Sigma 24-70 2.8Macro from Onestop:D
I know there are some quality control issues with the Sigmas, but how do you tell? Is there a specific photo you can take and tell if the lens ok, sharp enough, etc?:help:

I've taken a some quick sample pics(Click for full size):

Its a Nikon D80 and using Hoya UV filters.

IMHO the alledged QC issues are overblown.

Don't worry about it, and don't look for problems would be my advice.
 
the qc problems i have heard about is forward or back focusing, this means the lens locks on to where you want it, but due to not being set correct, is actually focused in front or behind that point. The shots you have took show sharp images of the bike etc, so as long as your happy, then thats it.

i agree the sigma problems are over stated.
 
I bought one on Saturday :), ended up getting mine locally as I wanted the 3 year UK warranty :bonk:

I can't wait to go Big Cat hunting with it :woot:
 
They look fine to me too, I have had 4 Sigma lenses, all were very sharp with no QC issues. ( still have a 105mm macro) Try the foxgloves at a smaller aperture, it will probably sharpen up a lot, but it still looks good.
Did you hand hold or use a tripod for these?
It would be best to use a tripod to eliminate any camera shake and use a remote or self timer for test shots. But, I think you can become obsessed with taking too many test pictures trying to pick faults that are not there.

My own feeling were that the bad ones would be well published and the good ones were just quietly working away.
I'm still learning, big time. I'm still working out ISO levels, etc. I am enjoying it though and thats the main thing.
Cheers for the comments on the bike. I really can't do it justice and its a disgrace how little i use it:whistling:
The photos were all handheld. I still need to work on my technique for bracing myself, thank god the 70-300 has VR!!:naughty:
 
I have viewed 100% size and they look ok to me.
For front/back focusing, read and download the chart here

Mind you, I bought 1 before and it was soft but it improves at around F9-ish which defies its purpose being a F2.8 lens.
Returned it and got a 24-105L and never regretted it.

If you get a good copy, its a cracking lens!
