So they're releasing a new 50 f1.4 art. Does anybody know much about it?

I like my samyang 85 f1.4 and have the older nikkor 1.4afd. I find the nikkor isn't as contrasty or as sharp wife open and the new sigma is supposedly going to be designed with the "higher resolution cameras in mind"

No idea on cost yet but might be interested if it's reasonable. Hopefully it will perform well wide open.

the old one performed well wide open from what I've seen, the only flaw was reported autofocus issues, if they fix that then nothing else comes close.

Little bit of info at the bottom of the page here from CES, seems very good build quality and quite weighty for a 50mm 1.4 lens, will wait and see if the sharpness lives up to their promises and what the AF is like...

Lets hope the AF is better, i had, and returned the 35 1.4. focus is just ok with center focus and could sometimes just be off, when i say off i mean its focussing 50 feet behind the subject and at 1.4 you cant even see what you were trying to photograph, on the outer focus points it behaved like a drunk. just might as well not bother hitting focus. I hope this is better as when the 35 was in focus it was gorgeous.

From Canon Rumors

The new Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art has been reengineered and redesigned to set a new standard of performance in the Art line. A staple focal length, the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art is a pro level performer for full-frame DSLRs great for many different types of photography including portraits, landscapes, studio work and still-life. It has been updated to include SLD glass and optimized for rich peripheral brightness with improved large aperture performance by positioning wide elements into the front groups. Other updates include an optimized autofocus algorithm for smoother focusing and a floating focusing system to reduce lens movement while focusing. Under the Global Vision line, it features a new matte finish, improved AF on/off switch and guarantees every lens is tested with Sigma’s proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system before being shipped. Now with 13 elements in 8 groups compared to the previous 8 elements in 6 groups, it also has improved close focusing at 15.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6

Both lenses incorporate Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) system to produce quiet, high-speed auto focus. In addition, they include Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, and to ensure high-quality images throughout the entire zoom range. The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM lenses are also compatible with Sigma’s USB dock and the company’s Mount Conversion Service.

The MTF is incredibly good. It is on Sigma website. It actually looks to be sharper than 35mm in the corners. There are suggestions it uses similar design to Zeiss Otus, so pricing could be a bit of a shock! Let's see how Canon responds and hope for some price movement [down]

i'm really interested in this lens. let's hope they sort the AF out. I tried the original Sigma 50 (twice) and i just couldn't get it to focus accurately or consistently on my 5DII which was such as shame because the aesthetic and feel of the images from it was wonderful. Fingers crossed.

As you'd see if you look at my previous posts, the previous 50 1.4 is a lens I rave about. I've never had any of the issues people mention, although I've no idea if that's because I've got an extremely good copy or they sorted issues after a certain time. I do know that through chance that two people bought the same time as me had their copy straight from Sigma (an old thread on here shows one person getting theirs the same time as me) when stocks were depleted and stock came straight from the factory, and they also raved about theirs.

Anyway, I've dropped, or rather launched mine across the landing with my old camera and it survived too :D It was pin sharp and still is, I love it. This new lens will have to be astonishing for it to beat my old copy, but I love the idea of the dock with it, so I'm inclined to purchase it for that alone as I have to MA on my 5dmk3 with my old copy, although it's spot on with the 60D.

Anyway, yay for new stuff! Gimmie :D

I’m surprised that it’s slightly lighter than the old one considering the extra elements in the new one. I currently own the old version and it gets some fantastic images, but aesthetically this one is much improved, and the performance is likely to be better, which I’m hoping is true because I’d like to see the lens being sharper at F1.4.To be honest though, I think I’d get a 50mm F1.2L if I were to get rid of my current one.
