I'm thinking about selling my 400 2.8is and buying a brand new Sigma 120-300...Has anyone of the guys shooting top end football used one or had experience of using one ?

I'm really interested in the speed of focus with the Canon EOS MKIV or the MKIII ...Also focus accuracy

I'm sure Mark (DemiLion) has one but I think his photos are mainly horsey ones (if I remember correctly). However he may have an a valid view on focussing speed.

pictures on a sigma are great.. i had a 120-300 and i thought it was the bees knees (i know the new ones even better) ... but no matter how good it is.. it will never compare to a pic taken on the canon 400 2.8L so it seems strange that you would swap one for the other... unless your downsiding to one body?

i tried one - very poor indeed. Even the oldest 400 2.8 will easily outclass it.

I really liked mine.. but thats the trouble with sigma and everyone who uses sigma lenses... I was guilty of it myself.. I loved the siggy 70-200 and then the 120-300 and others all love there sigma lenses... so they (like i did) tell everyone how great they are and no need for a canon L ...

Its only when you seriously try a canon L you know the differnce.. for me it was massive... sigma lenses are great and produce really good pictures.... but a canon L ... just so much better and for me i would never gop back to a sigma as good as they are.. would be a big step backwards..

Tug, my main concern would be losing 100mm, apparently Sigma havent cured the focus breathing issue of the old lens which only gives you approx 270mm not 300mm at the long end, much like Nikons newer 70-200mm VRII

Dont forget, eventually you will have go full frame if you want to stick with a 1 series camera, so you will lose approx another 100mm from the 1.3x crop of the MKIII and MKIV sp you could come down from an effective 520mm with your current 1D and 400mm right down to 270mm with a FF camera

Massive no no for field sports IMHO

Excellent point. :plusone:

Thank you for all the valid points that have being raised.

I think I'll sit on it a while and try and make a more reasoned decision in March.
