New shadow farm minister

The problem with radical veganism is the intolerance (as with any other radical or extremist) - I have no problem with them having any ethical or religious belief, but i have a major issue with them using positions of power to force me to live according to their beliefs

Yes. That would annoy me a lot too.

Who are these vegans in positions of power and in what way are they forcing you to live according to their beliefs?

currently none - but if labour were to be elected the new shadow defra minister would be one such (although frankly with the current shadow cabinet that might be the least of our problems)

Ah right OK. So it's if the labour party get elected and Ms McCarthy also wins her election and she's done a good enough job in 5 years at Defra to gain that cabinet position and she suddenly decides to impose her views on you (which is something I don't think she's ever done so far - had you even heard of her last week?) then it would be something to worry about.

I agree. But as you say, there are probably more pressing concerns.

That'd happen?

Whilst the current Health minister has some odd views about homeopathy I don't think that's the worst thing about his behaviour towards the NHS, and the Climate change denier at the Envirinment hasn't reopened coal fired power stations.

I lose track - was he the guy who came up with this crazy nuclear power station deal? The one where we pay China not to build us a power station.

I'd say allowing the NHS to waste £50m on treatments that don't work whilst there is a funding crisis is pretty bad.

Did that actually happen? NHS web page currently says they won't pay for homeopathy on the grounds it's nonsense.

But homeopathy has been funded on the NHS prior to this government - I don't want to cross post or suggest any influence, but the Royal Family are big followers of homeopathy.

I think they're going to build them, but I'm no expert - I freely admit nuclear power is a bit complicated and I find it scary.

True, but this is the first government where the Minister is a keen advocate. Fortunately, they are not forced to prescribe them, and apparently prescriptions and referrals for witchcraft are falling. Hurrah for rationality.
And I think it's only Charles who's a homeopath. Too much time talking to his plants, methinks.

I shouldn't have written "force" - "allow" is the correct phrase. and yes, millions have been spent on homeopathy within the NHS over the years - although the high point was apparently 2000 and has been dropping since then.

If they are now refusing to pay at all, that represents a major (unannounced) policy shift - can you link to the page, please?

Charles is openly a follower, and so was his Grandma.
HRH doesn't let us know much about her lifestyle but it'd be strange if it had skipped a generation.

Did I read somewhere awhile back that the shells are poisonous, that's why you can only buy pre-shelled Brazil nuts now?
Half the fun was trying to crack them open without spilling the contents half way around the world :(
Surely now though, you're getting more nut for your money :-)

And at least Brazils ARE nuts....unlike Peanuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews.....et al.

Um......

Brazil nuts aren’t nuts. Like horse chestnuts, they are seeds contained in a capsule or pod, which splits apart. True nuts don’t split – the seed and the fruit are one and the same. Brazil nuts mostly come from Bolivia (in Brazil, they are called castanhas, or chestnuts). They grow at the very top of enormously tall trees, in round wooden capsules packed with between eight and two dozen seeds. When the pods fall the seeds are released.

You're right.

The Queen, an advocate of homeopathy, alongside Catherine Zeta Jones and Sir Paul McCartney, always has 60 vials of alternative remedies in a leather carrier when she travels abroad in case she falls ill.
*sigh* Where is that facepalm?

Without going to far off track there are a lot of people out there that find they do.
The native American Indians have been taking "Aspirin in its pure form" for thousands of years.
Whether they work, or wether its all in the mind is open to debate, but even medical practitioners ( Gps) have been know to prescribe a placebo

I just liked the challange of getting them out in one piece :D

From the link you quoted ;)

Plenty of bags of mixed nuts (unshelled) and Brazil nuts in our local Sainsbury's. The trick is in choosing the cracker - we have a plastic screw type one that gives loads of control over the pressure. The problem with Brazils is that they're often stuck to the inside of their shell but pick one that rattles and it'll probably come out in one piece.

Like red velvet cupcakes being largely made of crushed beetles, mobile phones are an environmental catastrophe and coffee is radioactive.

Insects are actually a good source of protein, we should probably be eating more
Mobile phones - yup - Eric Pickersgill did a really good series showing the effects mobile devices have had on our lives by removing or staging shots without phones: http://ericpickersgill.com/
Radioactive - most things are to some extent, I daresay I get more from my luminous watch, certainly from the number of xrays etc I've had in my life.

Slight sidetrack, but this is the last series that Stephen Fry will present, Sandy Toksvig is taking over

I know. I mentioned in another thread :-)

Why am I not surprised:rolleyes:

Not surprised because it has long been an established principle that when appointing people to ministerial jobs it is highly desirable that they have zero experience of the department they are to "control". They then become participants in the game of musical ministerial chairs which will soon see them as head of another department of which they have no experience or out on their jacksies.

yep times is a changing towards vegan crap ,even the mcD'S quarter pounder today had far to much onion for my liking :exit:

Sod that. I'll not be watching it from then on.

It'll still be the same team providing the (?dis?)information, just a different face presenting it. Not sure if a Toksvig/Davies combination will work as well but I'll give it a chance.

Not a fan of Toksvig, I find yer an irritating pita. Fry, I like.

I'm assuming a typo!!! ;)

Down here, "yer" = "you". The Y key is just above the H key. Unless you meant me?

Oh, aye that. Never noticed.
