My Epson scanner has just given up the ghost, I used it very rarely on a very old PC (running XP) does anyone know if the new scanners can run on such an old system, or do they need W10 or 11?

What type of scanner did you have/are you looking for, Ken? (eg dedicated 135 scanner, flatbed for 120 and larger, etc)

D'oh, I've just re-read, and you specifically said Epson scanner, so flatbed.

I think that the Epson Scan 2 software only works on newer OS. I wasn't able to run the original Epson Scan on my up to date Mac versions, meanwhile ES2 doesn't support my older V500 scanner. Luckily Vuescan Pro does support it (and many other older scanners, thousands of them). Some older versions of Vuescan are available at https://www.hamrick.com/alternate-versions.html. Vuescan can be downloaded as a trial.

Some folk on here are still using old 4000 series Epson scanners, so you may be able to get an older one from fleabay, with the usual caveats. There are of course some older scanners with SCSI interfaces, which pretty much require older computers! Some very good indeed.

You might get a more comprehensive answer if you asked for this thread to be moved to Talk Film & Conventional...

Remembering my early days in IT I thought the whole point of scanners drivers was universality.

I’d hope someone has bodged a multi generation TWAIN driver.

(TWAIN Technology Without An Interesting Name)
