Hi

Got a brand new SB-600 the other day - put some batteries into it, it all lights up (display, red ready light etc.) but there is no flash when I press the test button nor when I mount it on the camera.

Have tried the two-button reset and different batteries but nothing.

Any ideas or is it faulty??

Thanks

Have you tried a second set of batteries? they could be low.

Have tried a spare set but am just charging the original set now to try them again. They are unused (but I had charged them).

Sorry missed the bit about you trying other batteries :bonk:

I have an SB600 and if the test button doesn't work it would seem to be faulty, as it is new can you exchange it?

I head a "dead on arrival" experience with an SB600 some time ago too. If a new set of batteries does not change the situation, just return it for nother one.

I have seen LOADS of SB600's being sent back for an exchange for the exact same problem mentioned above. It seems to be a common problem.

Just exchange all of your gear for canon and then you wouldn't have a problem

Are you using rechargeable batteries?
Lots of reported problems with cheap rechargeables in flash units...get the higher output ones or use disposables...

If the ready light comes on, then the osc has done its job and the capacitor is fully charged.

Thanks all. Seems like a dead unit. I got if abroad so will now have to see how good the worldwide service warranty is!
Will be calling Nikon in the morning.

Taking it back to the retailer is not really an option!

Have tried with high power rechargeables and disposables and no joy.

Any pointers/advice for when I talk to Nikon? Should I ask for a repair or a new unit?

Thanks
