I need to go bigger than A4, but keep the budget sensible.

What's the difference in simple terms between A3 and A3+ (Does the latter accept a long roll of paper to do big pano's?)

you don't get A3 printers they are all A3+

A3+ is 329mmx 483mm
A3 is 420mmx290mm

not all A3+ printers can take roll paper

hmmmm...

why can nothing be simple?

up to about £400 and generally prefer Canon for printers

Canon Pixma pro 9500 would be my choice for that money.

I have the 9000 and its a superb printer. Great colour rendition and will take all sorts of paper. Not sure if the 9500 will do roll paper as I've never needed to use it so never investigated when I got my 9000.

Chris - looking at the 9000 on Wex now....

Roll paper isn't a necessity, just a nice toy to have if i could......

.

I have the Canon 9500 mkII, there was £100 cashback (bringing it to me ~£250).
Officially the printer doesn't take roll, however, if I remember right (I looked into cutting up a 16" roll earlier in the year) it can do 14"+ x 54" which is pretty long (4.5')
A3+ is 13"x19", it is an impressive size for showing to people (seems much more substantial than A3 for some reason), but can be a right PITA to get frames/mounts for. I ended up getting an A2 portfolio case.

The 9500 is also a pigment printer so longer lasting prints. I cant remember whether it has 2 blacks but maybe CP can fill you in on that.

I use refillables in my 9000 and Cityinkexpress ink, giving me great results. I just dont know the lifespan of the prints.

I've had one experience with blocked heads due to leaving it months and months without printing. The head is removable so an overnight soak in cleaning solution had it back to normal in no time.

There are advantages to having an Epson printer too but in my own personal experience they are a swine to set up but once working superb too.

I again personaly like the idea of getting a box of Canon paper, reading the code on the side, set the profile to that and bang out comes as perfect a print as you could expect.

You realise that Epson has the same thing plus a wider range of papers and easier to use profile names with a simpler GUI too.

for me the print quality you get from the top end A3+ printers are the same with Epson having the edge on neutral B&W.

you are out of luck if you want a CIS with the canon pro 9500 though.

I think it is the r2880 that POAH usually raves about? Warehouse express have just sent through an email showing that thee is a cashback offer on, bringing the price (afterwards) to £416

Think we've been here before.

Had both and neither is more difficult than the other. Get the code off the box of Canon paper, choose the matching profile and job done.

What the profile is named doesn't matter to me. Then again I'm not chained to any manufacturer. Just seems to me more people have problems getting prints out that look right from Epsons than Canons.

But AGAIN as I've said thats MY opinion only.

i'm not particularly loyal to any brand..... my total home printer experience is

a) an all in one HP jobbie, printer, scanner, fax, come whatever which is crap in my opinion, other than printing off a standard a4 letter

b) a canon pixma 3600. Which I like and find easy to use, hence my pref for canon. I am sure epsom and others are equally as good.

thats meaningless though - I can use both canon and epson without any problem since I know how to print.

The R2880 at WEX and Calumet after cash back is £415 till the end of December and the Canon 9000 Mk II at £308, with 9500 at £429 after cash back.
