Hi All. I am currently starting to learn and practise photography. I am currently practising alot of baby and portrait pics. I currently own a canon eos 300d but am looking to upgrade to a eos 600 or 650d. Does anyone have any advise on which would be best and also what lens to get?
Thank you :)

Welcome to TP.

Really, those 2 cameras have more similarities than differences, if you buy the older one that leaves you more money for lenses.

You can't go wrong buying the 50mm 1.8 as a starter portrait lens. But if you have money to spend the 85mm 1.8 is better by far. You'll probably also want a standard zoom as a walkaround lens, the kit lens is OK, a 2.8 zoom would be better but they cost a lot more. Think of the 600d, kit lens and the 50 1.8 as a starter kit, and get better versions of those if you can afford it.

Thank you very much :) Thats a huge help. I have been booked to take some photos at a christening in the next few weeks but am worried about lighting etc in church. I am worried about the low lighting. Do you have advice on this?

Thanks Again :)

As the no flash allowed in most if not all churches ,,, all down to your budget ,, and not wanting to be on top of the christening ,, id go for the 1.8mm 85mm, ive a 50mm and 85 that i always take to dim light locations ,, thou with the extra reach the 85mm wins

if budget is tight another option would be to hire a lens for the day (purchasing outright is more sensible if you can afford it if this isnt a one off)

I've never shot a christening, but when shooting weddings i've only encountered a handful of venues that were too dark for an f2.8 lens - I use a tamron 17-50 f2.8 , but also have a 35mm f1.8 and a 50mm f1.8 for back up (note that although the 85mm is an excellent lens on a full frame body, on a crop sensor it can be too long for a lot of shots)

Not if you step back a pace or two!

true - but whether you can depends on circumstances , at the front of a church (as i assume a christening would be) there may be limited space. In the wedding context there may be gravestones or other obstructions outside and so forth

plus in either context the further back you stand the more likely it is someone will get between you and subject at an inoportune time.

I do have an 85mm (mines the samyang), and a 90mm f2.8 macro lens which I have used either for candids where more reach might be appropriate (or when using a full frame body) - All i'm saying is that my view is that the 50mm has more alround usefulness on a crop sensored body
