New phone, so different size SIM needed - is it simple to swap and copy all the info ?

OK, so the eldest daughter is getting a new phone for Christmas and will need a new SIM card.
Do I need to go to her provider (Tesco) to get one and get them to change her number and transfer all the info on the old one or what ?
I am not planning on buying the phone from Tesco and don't want to deprive her of her phone and then drive 50 miles round trip to the nearest store with a phone department unless I need to so any help would be appreciated - thanks!
 
Assuming that she uses Tesco now and will use Tesco with the new phone, their provider (o2?) will activate a change of number to the new SIM at her request. All other info on the old phone, contacts etc, she will need to do herself.
 
Are you buying the new phone on contracr? If so you will get a new sim for that sp.
Her current phone and sim will need to be backed up via a pc.
You need to ask the old sp (Tesco?) To give you a pac code if you want to port the old number to the new sim.
Backup her old sim before it is disconnected. Having said that I don't know anyone who use sim storage now.

She is with Tesco on a SIM only contract at present and it has another 6 months to go.
I plan to buy the phone elsewhere so assume that Tesco can transfer her old number over without her needing a PAC code and all that or am I wrong as usual ?
As for the rest, it looks like a rainy day job for her then !

All you need to do is get her (I'm assuming she is the account holder) to phone Tesco and request the new size sim. Once they send out the new sim the swap will happen and the old sim deactivates and the new sim starts working. There is no PAC or similar needed, it's a simple request for a new SIM card.

You could do the sim request in advance and just use an adapter if the new sim is of a smaller size than the old sim (for example, if the new sim is a nano sim, and the old one being mini or micro).

Once you know what type of sim the new handset requires Tesco Customer service should be able to supply a new one, BUT, the old sim will get switched off, so nice as it might be to have the new phone up and running on Christmas day it might not happen without an obvious interruption in service.

If old and new sims are the same size, however, no problem; just move from old to new handsets on the day.

Also, it is possible, dependent on phone and the capacity of the sim memory, to copy phone-book details from the phone to the sim. Won't help too much if the sim's getting changed though.

One other option, if they are both Android phones, is to copy contacts from the old phone to a Google account then download to the new one. Doesn't use the sim, just the phone memory.

As everyone else is saying, if you stay with Tesco mobile you just ask them for a new sim of the right size.
From experience I would go to ebay, get a sim adaptor and request a micro sim. The adaptors will allow the sim to fit in any phone. handy if she breaks the new one and has to go back to use the old one or a cheap £5 handset.
 
Again, many thanks all - I had hoped to be able to give her the new phone all set up and working but that isn't likely, so she will have to watch me play with my new phone which I will be getting a week before but plan to hide it away until Christmas morning just to bug her.

Ahh, the joys of parenthood !

Good advice, but I think you mean a nano sim. With an adapter it can be used in any phone on the market.
 
assuming just a different size sim is needed (staying on same network), if it was me, I would get a sim adapter, trim the sim down to the correct size and use with the adapter until new phone day.
 
Current phone has a standard size sim (it is an HTC Desire C) and new phone takes a micro sim (Sony xperia Z1 Compact) - I think Peter69 and Kevin have come up with a very good suggestion !
 
The last few sims I've seen and used have been the size of an ordinary sim but scored to micro sim, if you need an ordinary sim just stick it in as it is, if you need micro just press it out of the ordinary sim. :)
 
Well, the solution that the friendly folk at my local O2 store came up with was to give me a discount to cover the remaining time with the current Tesco contract and to set me up with a new contract with them.
This means that daughter keeps her current phone working and has her new phone all set up and working (albeit with a different number) on Christmas day - we can then swap over to O2 the day after boxing day or whenever.
I guess it was my charm and good looks that helped swing the deal, although it could have been desperation to get rid of the old pilchard that kept on going it to ask for help..
