Hey folks maybe not the best place to look for advice but looking for a little help choosing a new phone,

Currently have an iPhone 3G and I don't really see any point upgrading to a 3GS, a lot of money for nothing extra I would use,

Been considering getting one of the O2 Simplicity Sims for £20 with wifi and data and using the iPhone basically as an internet device.

Was going to then get either a Blackberry Bold 9700 or Nokia E72 to complement it as I could really use a phone with email, a better performance on voice calls and with a cracking battery life as I travel a lot and the iPhone battery just doesn't cut it.

Really just wondering if maybe I'm missing something, maybe I could get one device to do both, was thinking about maybe an HTC Hero or HTC Touch HD2 but I don't really know a lot about them, how do they compare to the iPhone and what sort of breadth of applications is there available for them?

Cheers,

Chris

When my 3G contract expires in Feb Iam going to move to the iPhone simplicity rolling contract, then upgrade to the version 4 come July :D

I'll third that too, going onto the simplicity contract, then get the next iPhone on launch day.

ermm, gonna sound really stupid here, i'm on the simplicity 15, can i simply change the deal to simplicity 20 and buy an i-phone handset and have the full internet functionality or solely wi-fi in enabled areas?

but the rumoured 4g iphone will be a premium

If you wanted the mobile data to be free you'd need the unlimited web bolt on, which you can have free with the simplicity 20. From what I can tell anyway.

So was the 3G (and 3GS) when it came out.

Yup, that's the one which I'm on, just choose the unlimited web bolt-on.

I'm on a 'O2' Orbit 2 (a HTC Touch Cruise rebadged)

The HD2 is a very good phone, have a look and see if you can find somewhere to test it out. :)

Availability of applications wise, people were writing apps for WM before the iPhone was visualised. There are thousands out there and like the iPhone some are very good and some are rubbish. It even has the eubiqitus "fart" app (well quite a few...) :p

Thought about Android?

The Hero integrates really well with Facebook / Twitter / Flickr etc (much better than the iPhone), and the nexus One (Google) is up there with the best of them (1ghz Processor, 800 x 480 pixel OLED screen).

I picked up a free 3gs from o2 as a refurb this week, but i think its going back as i have just got so used to the nice little touches on android so am thinking of ordering a Nexus One direct from the states.. For example, when i wanted to forward a txt to someone as an email - no problem, two button presses and its done.

Don't get me wrong the iPhone is a phenomenal bit of kit, but it feels too 'constrained' after using the Hero.

Jailbreak it, and before you ask it doesn invalidate your warranty.

Mine contract ends on the 11th Feb....anyone know the proicess with canceling your iPhone contract?

Ive not contacted O2 yet. So best bet is phone O2 202 from your iPhone? Is that free?

Ask to speak to retentions

Ask to be put on the new iPhone £20 deal? With VVmail etc.

Couple of Q's, does your number stay the same? Does the PAYG deal start straight after your contract ends? What about insurance? Iam currently paying 7.50 per month.

Appreciate any advise :)

Been there, seen it, done, it, and customised the hell out of my 3gs in the past with custom lock screens, folders / catagories, SBS setting etc,

202 from an o2 handset is free, use option 2 all the way and ask for your PAC.

Use your PAC on your PAYG sim and the number transfers and the contract stops.

simples ;)

Fair one, loving some of the third party apps.

Iam sure Ive read that I can keep my number, hopefully I can.

Thats what the PAC is for, you use that to 'port' your number to the new payg / contact sim.

Yeah but as Iam sticking with O2 I think they deal with all that without a PAC...I could be wrong.

Had the E51 & up-graded via contract to Nokia E75. Super phone, large screen & easy keys to see (I'm getting on a bit now with varifocals). Also a slide out keyboard which is a bit fiddly. I mostly use it for emails, phone and internet (orange). Has photo+video etc. Looked at the iphone but wouldn't use most of the features plus fingers were dialling the wrong person whilst trying demo. I believe battery consumption is large (do you have to send it back to apple to change battery). Nothing against iphone, but not for me

alternatively you can unlock the iphone now:

http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html

and then use any other network sim (depends on how good your o2 signal is where you are i guess). I know '3' have a good offer on their £15 no contract sim, you get 300 mins, unlimited txts and internet

not sure how good the simplicity deal is.

might be worth thinking of :)

I have a HTC Touch Pro and a Nokia N97. With both of these (and most modern 3G phones) using them as a modem is a doddle. The absolute icing on the cake with the HTC is that when you plug into your laptop by a cable, you are charging your phone at the same time.
The N97 is a great phone when it decides to work, plus Nokia changed the USB socket format away from the standard one which is a bitch! I think new Blackberry's are the same...ARGHHHHHH Now I have to carry TWO cables in my laptop bag...can you believe that!?!?!

contract changed to simplicity 20, with web bolt-on. 700 mins plus 1400 texts, now just need the i-phone to go with it!.....................

For all of it's plusses though, the Hero's battery life sucks - I suppose the bonus is that you can charge it with any mini USB cable, so I now a cable at work, home and in the car, so I'm always 'fully charged'!! :D

Well in the end I've picked up a Nokia E72 as my "work" phone on Vodafone and I'm leaning toward changing my iPhone 3G for a 32GB 3GS but I could just wait until July, jailbroke my iPhone on Friday and I have to say its much better now but I'm assured a jailbroken 3GS is even more special!

Do you get 3G on the simplicity sim only deal?

I have the 'normal' Simplicity deal with unlimited web but I don't think it's 3G so just wondered.

I have had the Iphone from the start. Im now on a month to month basis for £20 which gives 1200 text, 600 mins, unlimited Wifi and unlimited internet. I am waiting on the new one coming out which promises a few big steps forward, only then will i go back to an 18 month contract.

I'm contemplating the same, iPhone Contract ends on Feb 11th although I suspect the new iPhone is going to be more about OS 4.0 than any major step forward with hardware, if it wasn't for the apps I've got I'd be buying a Google Nexus One.
