well it sounds like the desktop is about to crash and burn so considering getting a new pc.

I don't really want to go to PC world etc and would like just the box.

Have a decent monitor etc...

Requirements are

a) large capacity disk drive. 1 TB+

b) Lots of RAM.

It won't be used for gaming, but mainly photo editing etc and internet.

Where is a decent place to go to get a decent spec at a decent price.

My understanding is 64 bit windows can handle more than 3-4 Gb of Ram.

64 bit windows can handle up to 16GB ram IIRC

If i were speccing a new system i'd also include a SSD with the opperating software etc on, a big HDD for storage (as per your spec) and possibly a second ssd set as a scratch disc

I'd also suggest getting a graphics card which can handle dual display as its very handy to have your tools open on a seperate monitor to your picture.

Get a copy of micromart and theres loads of adds for builders where you can spec pretty much anything you want

Hi Lynton,

I can wholeheartedy recommend http://www.cougar-extreme.co.uk/

They built my current system to my own spec over two years ago, and I have had no problems to date (touching wood here!). They are a small company who provide a fantastic personal service. No speaking to recorded voices here, you speak to a human being. They are incredibly helpful and tolerant even of computer idiots like me.

I have no connection with this company other than as a very satisfied customer.

Best starting point is probably to say what you have now and what your budget for upgrade/replacement is.

thanks all for comments so far...........

as to current build........a packard bell tower unit from PC world - about 3-4 yrs old, running windows 7, 320 gb hard drive,

According to the "system file"

AMD phenom 8550 triple core processor 2.2 GHz
3 Gb of ram.
32 bit.

I am guessing budget of around £500 or so.......... for the computer bit - don't need a monitor etc etc..........

Sorry, but really useless at all the PC spec stuff...

That will leave your current system in the dust. 8GB RAM and a quad core i5 and a 1TB drive. Price of the drive is good considering the recent floods in Thailand and the price hikes.

Add another £100-£150 for the cost of building it and the OS.

Forgot to add a CD drive but there like a tenner.

Just to give you an idea of what you can get for £500. You could shave some money off with a cheaper PSU but I wouldn't recommend going with a budget PSU.

Also in a few months or so Intel will be releasing their Ivy Bridge CPU's so might be worth holding off. If anything it should reduce prices a little.
