new pc needed, lack of room

Hi,
Im in the market for a new pc. Budget of 1k.

The problem is I dont have a huge amount of room. I miss having an desktop pc but I refuse to spend my time lockec in a room away frombthe other half. Typically I had a laptop but they have a max shelf life of about 2 years with me and I lothe the fact you get less bang for your buck spec wise.

I want to play games with high end settings etc as well as photo and video editing.

Any one else been in the same situation with recomendations or am I doomed to a laptop?

If its the laptop route, any recommendations?

How about 2 devices, a desktop and a tablet.

Tablet for browsing on the sofa and a desktop for the real stuff.

You can get good desktops for £600 (especially if you already have a monitor) and an ipad for £400.

Don't know if this would float:

A small shuttle case running an i5 or i7, using either a 256Gb or 512Gb SSD with 16GB RAM running WIN7 64bit and an external USB3 HDD to store your photos games etc on.
