New Old Film Challenge discussion thread

My age old moan is the challenge is not on long enough as I had a shot to enter (well I have quite a few to choose). Just IMO it should be two weeks at least.

I could agree in a way, it got to 12pm yesterday and I realised I hadn't posted an entry.
Truth is, I'm not sure it would have helped if it had been a month :)

Just thinking out loud really, but I'm wondering if it's the scanning requirement that's keeping entries down? I know I have prints and slides made many years ago that could be scanned for entry, but that isn't allowed under the present rules. What do others think?

That caught me, I thought I had lots, but battled to find one already scanned, then forgot to submit it :)

On the other hand, it has been going OK, may just be the phase of the moon

It's definitely the scanning for me, I have only recently (Aug 2019) gotten back into film and whilst I have loads of old film shots that would fit from the old days none are scanned and getting them scanned (I don't scan my own) is dufficult and not really cheap just for a challenge so I'm out of most themes because I really only use my film for my Landscape projects. That said if I can shoehorn something in I will jusy to take part.

The scanning rule is one I reckon I made up and chucked in when I had to set a challenge a looooong time ago. It seemed reasonable at the time, but if it's stopped 3 people from entering then it oughta go! Next person to set a challenge just edit it out of your cut and paste! (Perhaps we should check with original Lord of the NOFC, @RaglanSurf , but I'm pretty sure it wasn't there at the start.)

Absolutely no objection from me @ChrisR, I seem to remember this was only supposed to be something to fill the dark nights in between the regular monthly film challenges but it has developed a life of its own.

Given the whole thing is for fun, and the only prize is the chance to choose the next theme, then rules should be at a minimum to entice maximum participation, I think.

Any photo that was originally made using film (or other analogue methods) and was taken before the competition ought to be eligible.

Maybe taking away the need for the photo to be taken before the competition start might actually encourage people to get out shooting with a topic in mind, but keeping entries to within a week to keep some urgency.

First it wouldn't then be old film, second, having a week to shoot , develop and scan a film I think would put a final nail in it, that's really pushing it. :)
Of course if that is just an option, it won't do any harm, it is perfectly possible, though it still wouldn't be old film, which I think add a lot of interest to it.

Just removing the need to have scanned and processed it before the week starts should open it up very effectively.

We have another competition for freshly taken photos. IMHO this one is just a bit of fun to encourage people to have a look through their back catalogue and enter something vaguely applicable... shoehorns and crowbars encouraged! So I'm with @sangom and definitely wouldn't support opening it up to freshly taken photos.

That would defeat the object of this challenge, there are lot of old photos and negatives tucked away in shoeboxes that never see the light of day, this was a way of allowing folk to show off some of their old photos with the added incentive of a little competition, as @ChrisR says, we already have the option to take new images and enter them in the FPOTY competition and post stuff up in the Show Us Your Film Shots thread,
Of course there's nothing to stop you setting up a weekly film challenge but knowing a lot of folk on here struggle to finish a roll of film in a year I fear 7 days may be a bit too much of a rush for some.

Peter Spencer: "Kodak CP 100 6094, aka ?" Could that be "5094" which would make it VR 100 (did it become Colorplus?)
Yes, I expect you are right. I copied the film type from my index spreadsheet so it is no doubt a typo.

Relaxation of the scanning rule would be beneficial. I haven't had a problem with the rule because I find the picture by browsing my galleries of scanned films.

A new challenge: "Things on Hills" is now live.

I suggest that anyone starting their turn at NOFC, and later setting the poll, PM's me and Chris to put up a Notice for the Start, Poll Open, and Poll Closed milestones. I'm sure Chris won't mind doing that and I certainly don't. It might help get more entries and more votes.

I would also particularly like those running the challenges to add a post on the challenge thread as well, when the poll is put up. That helps to boost the thread to visibility.

I was half expecting your entry to be your shot of me nearly falling down the hill at last year's Castleton meet. :D
Dang, missed that delicious possibility! OTOH you owe me a pint for my thoughtful forbearance... ;)

There appears to be something wrong with the poll set-up, can't add or change votes

I've fixed the voting issue (a radio button not clicked) and put up the notice.
Thanks, glad it was something easy, I started voting then the doorbell rang, so I submitted what I had done with the intention of continuing later :)

Don't know about anyone else but I'm not seeing the notice, let us know if it is active for you?

Okay. not sure why it didn't show for me but as long as others have seen it.

I did reset the old one before updating it for the new one, and it did work for me ok. Strange.

New challenge is ready to go, have at it.
