Hi,

I've beeen using an Epson R800 for a few years now, but have long since given up using it for colour repro. Letters, invoices and other non-accurate colour repro is about all it can cope with.

Now the matt black nozzles have become blocked which means that I can't even do that now! I've done the cleaning cycle several times which has used up vast quantities of ink but not cleaned the nozzles.

I'm b******d if I'm buying another Epson after this and a previous blocked nozzles episode. So what would make a good replacement?

I have to admit I have had the same thing with epsons in the past.
Currently I have no printer but thats more to do with the fact that what I want needs to be wireless and the Canon Pixma A3 models aren't wireless.

Question to the OP.

Have you always used genuine inks or have you tried saving a bit and used cheapo inks? If cheapos, how much do you reckon you've saved in the life of the printer? Does it cover the replacement cost?

At first I used epson inks, but the nozzles still got blocked. Epson sold me a "recond" r800 without inks for about £100, and I carried on using epson ink.

Then I gave up printing accurate colour and went over to jet-tec inks. Since then its been used mainly for letters and invoices etc.

I'm up to here with epson printers, to be honest.

Had the same problem with Epson and ended up binning it, replaced it with a Canon and all is well so far.

Not sure I can justify an a3+ photo printer, unfortunately......

A4 Canon printer's are good now day's, good luck with which ever one your get..:)

out of interest how much colour ink have you been using for your letters?

You'd be surprised how much!

It uses colour ink every time it switches on. And of course, when you try to clean the print heads, it uses bucket loads of everything......:bang:

Or are you trying to suggest a B&W printer would be OK?

To be honest, right now I'm thinking of a Canon multifunction machine.

I had issues with my Epson R800 as well and ditched it a few years ago when it needed new print heads. I was using it purely for photo printing and using an HP all in one for everything else. I ditched that as well and got an HP photosmart C7280 all in one and use an online service for anything A3.

just got a Canon PIXMA ip4700 £80 cracking printer quiet and fast even printing full A4 good colour prints well inpressed just gone from epson as well

AHHH the old epson nozzles, yes unfortunately epson nozzles do block, and although they recommend you push ink through them in an effort to clean them i have had little success with it ever working. 7 day shop and a few others did do cleaning cartridges for a while. These consisted of solvents which would eat away the ink... not sure how well it worked mind.

I now use Canon. I did have a pixma 6600d which was fantastic and printed many photos, but was getting a bit costly as each ink tank was costing £18 in retail stores. I decided to get an AIO again a Canon MP620. I do very little photo printing at home any more, however the quality on this is brilliant.

Unfortunately if you do not want to be plagued with head cleaning your only real options are to go with a Canon which has a removable head, or another brand such as HP / Lexmark as the heads are built in to the cartridges instead of the printer, however DPI is simply not up there with the Canon and Epson printers.
